There aren't many rifles that give you a full 16 inch barrel in a package just 26 inches long, and that's the whole point of the Desert Tech WLVRN. This is Desert Tech's third generation bullpup, the successor to the MDRX, and it's a genuine redesign rather than a facelift. The internals were reworked with 49 fewer parts than the previous platform, and the short stroke gas piston system runs cleaner and softer than a direct impingement gun. Pair that with 300 Blackout, a cartridge built for suppressed shooting and short barrels, and you end up with a rifle that feels right at home in tight quarters, on a hog hunt, or wearing a can at the range.
The headline feature is the barrel mounting system, which Desert Tech pulled straight from its SRS and HTI precision rifle line. The clamping mechanism is machined directly into the receiver, which stiffens the whole system and improves accuracy by up to 30 percent over the older platform. The 16 inch chrome moly barrel wears a 1:6 twist that stabilizes heavy subsonics as well as lighter supersonic loads, and the 5/8×24 threaded muzzle comes topped with a Radian tri-prong flash hider. When you're ready for a different caliber, the WLVRN converts to 5.56, 308, or 6.5 Creedmoor with a barrel swap, no separate upper required.
Plenty of rifles claim ambi controls, but the WLVRN commits. Charging handles, magazine release buttons, bolt catch, and safety selectors all have mirrored placements, and the ejection side is swappable, so lefties get a rifle that works with them instead of against them. The hard coat anodized aluminum receiver carries a full length Picatinny top rail for optics, the M-LOK handguard takes lights and grips wherever you want them, and the polymer chassis keeps the whole rifle at a manageable 7.55 pounds. The 300 Blackout cartridge was designed with suppressed shooting in mind, and the WLVRN's piston system helps keep gas in the face to a minimum compared to direct impingement guns.
You can. The WLVRN is a multi-caliber platform, and Desert Tech sells conversion kits that let it switch between 300 Blackout, 5.56 NATO/223, 308 Win, and 6.5 Creedmoor. It handles both short frame and large frame cartridges in the same chassis, which is a rare trick among bullpups.
It's one of the best options out there for lefties. The charging handles, mag releases, bolt catch, and safety selectors all have ambidextrous placements, and the ejection side is user swappable. That means a left-handed person can set the rifle up to eject away from their face rather than just tolerating a right-handed layout.
