The micro-compact carry market is crowded, but the Derya DY9Z earns its spot in the conversation. It's a striker-fired 9mm built around a slim, reinforced polymer frame, and it does something most guns in this size class struggle with: it holds 15+1 rounds without becoming a handful to conceal or a chore to shoot. At 1.1 inches wide, 6.5 inches long, and just 1.25 pounds unloaded, this thing genuinely disappears under a cover garment. The Barrett Brown frame paired with the black Melonite-finished slide gives this particular variant a two-tone look that stands out in a sea of all-black pistols.
The slide is forged from 4140 steel and treated with a black Melonite finish that handles corrosion and wear without fuss. Optic mounting is a direct RMSc cut right into the slide, no adapter plate needed, which keeps your optic as low as possible for a better cheek weld and faster target pickup. Run it without a red dot and you've got a white dot front and U-notch rear that give you a workable sight picture in a hurry. The slide serrations front and rear give you positive purchase for press checks and manipulations, even when your hands aren't dry.
Derya includes small, medium, and large backstraps in the box, which is a straightforward feature that a lot of people overlook until they realize how much of a difference grip fit makes on a compact gun. The frame also has an undercut trigger guard and an accessory rail on the dustcover, so you're not stuck choosing between a light and a usable grip. The magazine catch is a proprietary metal unit, a detail that matters for long-term reliability. The included 15-round metal magazine is also compatible with Glock 43X magazines for flush fit, which makes finding spare mags easy down the road.
The DY9Z is a solid pick whether you're buying your first carry pistol or just want something slim and capable without spending a lot. It runs reliably on standard-pressure 9mm and is +P rated for defensive loads. The trigger has a clean, well-defined wall and break that holds up well compared to other pistols in this class and price range.
The DY9Z slide is cut to the RMSc footprint, which fits a wide range of popular compact red dots including the Holosun EPS Carry, Shield RMSc, and Crimson Trace CTS-1550, among others. The cut is machined directly into the slide, so no adapter plate is required and the optic sits as low as possible. Just make sure the optic you choose uses the RMSc mounting pattern before purchasing.
The DY9Z is designed around magazines compatible with the Glock 43X platform for flush fit, including the Derya-branded 15-round metal magazine that ships with the pistol. OEM Glock 43X magazines will fit, though Derya notes that long-term use with polymer-bodied magazines can cause accelerated wear on the pistol's metal magazine catch. For best results, stick with the Derya DY9Z magazine or the ACT-MAG 43X magazine.
At 1.1 inches wide and 1.25 pounds unloaded, the DY9Z is genuinely thin and light enough for everyday carry. The 15+1 capacity is a real advantage in this size class, where most micro-compact pistols top out at 10 or 12 rounds. The included backstraps help you get a consistent grip, and the accessory rail means you can add a compact light if your holster supports it.
The DY9Z runs reliably on standard-pressure 9mm FMJ and JHP loads, and is rated for +P ammunition for defensive use. Derya recommends a muzzle velocity of at least 1,100 FPS for consistent cycling, which most major factory loads meet comfortably. Subsonic ammunition below 1,000 FPS may cause occasional cycling issues unless used with a suppressor.
The DY9Z is very close to the Glock 43X in footprint, making it a familiar size for anyone coming from that platform. One useful way to think about it: it carries like a slim single-stack but feeds from a double-stack 15-round metal magazine. The overall width of 1.1 inches keeps it in true micro-compact territory despite the higher capacity.
There is no external manual thumb safety on the DY9Z. It relies on two internal passive safeties: a firing pin block and an anti-drop trigger block. This is consistent with most modern striker-fired carry pistols, and the trigger safety integrated into the face of the trigger must be deliberately depressed for the gun to fire.
