A threaded barrel with nothing on it is just asking for trouble. Drop the gun in a case, bump the muzzle on a bench, or let range grit work its way into the threads, and suddenly your suppressor does not want to spin on straight anymore. The Dead Air Thread Protector DA424 is the easy fix. It threads onto any standard 1/2-28 right hand rimfire muzzle and covers 0.4 inches of thread, which handles the exposed threading on most 22 LR rifles and pistols out there.
Dead Air designed this protector to pair with the thread adapters used on the Mask-HD rimfire suppressor, so if you run a Mask on a Walther P22, Ruger Mark series, 10/22, or anything else wearing one of their adapters, this cap keeps those threads covered whenever the can comes off. That said, there is nothing proprietary about it. Since 1/2-28 is the standard rimfire thread pitch, it works just as well on factory threaded barrels from Ruger, Smith and Wesson, Savage, Tikka, and plenty of others.
This is a steel protector with a black finish, so it shrugs off the dings and scrapes that would chew up an aluminum cap, and it blends in with just about any barrel. Install takes seconds. Wipe the threads clean, start it by hand so you do not cross-thread it, and snug it down. Done.
Re-cutting damaged muzzle threads means gunsmith time and money, and a barrel that shoots fine can still refuse to hold a suppressor square if the threads are dinged. A small cap like this one keeps dust, moisture, and impacts away from the one part of your barrel you really cannot afford to mess up. If you own a threaded rimfire and a suppressor that does not live on the gun full time, keep one of these in the range bag. You will use it more than you think.
If your barrel or adapter has standard 1/2-28 right hand threads, yes. That is the most common rimfire thread pitch, found on threaded Ruger 10/22 and Mark IV barrels, S&W Victory pistols, and most aftermarket 22 barrels. It covers 0.4 inches of thread, which matches the typical exposed thread length on rimfire muzzles.
It is a smart pairing. Dead Air built this protector specifically to work with the Mask-HD thread adapters, so whenever the suppressor is off the gun, the adapter threads stay covered instead of collecting grit and dings. It works on any other 1/2-28 threaded muzzle too, so it is not limited to Mask owners.
This version is steel with a black finish. Steel holds up better to repeated on and off cycles and the occasional bump against a bench or case, which is exactly the abuse a thread protector is there to absorb.
Wipe the muzzle threads clean first, then start the protector by hand and make sure it spins on smoothly before snugging it down. If you feel resistance right away, back it off and restart to avoid cross-threading. Hand tight is plenty; there is no need for tools.
