Unlike a revolver in the same caliber, the Desert Eagle uses a gas-operated, rotating bolt action closer to a rifle than a typical pistol. That system soaks up a chunk of the .44 Magnum's punch before it ever reaches your hands, and the brake handles a good portion of what is left. Stick with full-power jacketed .44 Magnum loads. The gas system needs enough pressure to cycle reliably, so light target loads and .44 Special will not run the action. Avoid bare lead bullets as well, since lead fouling can clog the gas port and the polygonal rifling.
