There's a reason the Valor has held the flagship spot in the Dan Wesson lineup for so long. This is a full-size Government-pattern 1911 chambered in .45 ACP, built from forged stainless steel on both the slide and frame, finished in a bead-blasted matte stainless. The fit is exceptionally tight from the factory, and the slide-to-frame fit in particular is something most production guns can't come close to matching. No MIM parts anywhere in the gun, either, which matters a lot to serious 1911 people.
Dan Wesson packed this thing with features you'd typically have to request from a custom builder. The frontstrap and mainspring housing both carry sharp 25 LPI checkering for a confident grip without being punishing on the hand. The undercut trigger guard lets you ride the gun high, the Stan Chen SI magwell speeds up reloads without adding awkward bulk, and the recessed slide stop allows for aftermarket laser grip panels if you want to go that route. The tactical ambidextrous thumb safety and extended beavertail grip safety round out the control package nicely. GI-style rear cocking serrations give it that clean, classic 1911 look, while inset top serrations cut down on glare so your eye tracks straight to the sights.
The sights are a tritium front with a large orange ring paired with a serrated U-notch rear, giving you a solid low-light sight picture without the clutter of a fiber optic setup. Trigger pull on the Valor consistently comes in right around 4 pounds, which is about as good as it gets on a production 1911. It's crisp, it's clean, and it doesn't feel like it needs anything done to it. The G10 grip panels are slim and textured just enough to be functional without chewing up your hand after a long range session.
The Valor ships with two 8-round single-stack magazines, a barrel bushing wrench, cable lock, and owner's manual. It's the kind of box you open and feel like you got your money's worth before you ever get to the range.
Like most tightly fitted production 1911s, the Valor benefits from a break-in period. Dan Wesson's own manual acknowledges this, noting that failures to go into battery during the first few hundred rounds are normal for a gun fitted to this tolerance. Plan on running at least 200 rounds through it before drawing any conclusions about reliability, and use quality magazines during that process.
The Valor ships with two 8-round single-stack .45 ACP magazines and is compatible with standard 1911 single-stack magazines from major makers like Wilson Combat, Chip McCormick, and Tripp Research. Quality magazines make a real difference in any tightly fitted 1911, so it's worth sticking with well-regarded brands if you add to your supply.
The Valor is a Series 70 style pistol, meaning it does not have a firing pin block. Safety is provided by the grip safety, the ambidextrous manual thumb safety, and a half-cock notch on the hammer. Many 1911 purists prefer this arrangement for its simpler trigger pull and cleaner feel.
The Valor sits in a tier below true full-custom shops in terms of final hand-fitting and finish work, but it's widely regarded as one of the closest production 1911s to that level you can buy off the shelf. The forged stainless construction, no-MIM-parts policy, and hand-lapped slide-to-frame fit put it in a different class from most production pistols in a similar price range.
