There's something special about a .410 over/under, and the CZ Drake nails the formula without the boutique price tag. It runs the same CNC-machined action and internals found across CZ's over/under lineup, so you're getting proven guts inside a gun that looks like it costs a lot more than it does. The 28-inch barrels wear a gloss black chrome finish with an 8mm flat vent rib and brass bead up front, and CZ deleted the mid-rib between the barrels to shave weight, bringing this one in right around 6 pounds. That makes it an easy carrier on long walks after quail, doves, or squirrels, and a fun clays gun when you want to make things interesting.
The single selectable trigger lets you pick which barrel fires first, handy since the .410 Drake comes with fixed improved cylinder and modified chokes. Reach for the tighter pattern on the going-away bird or the open choke on the flush, your call. Extractors lift both hulls clear of the chambers so you can pluck them out by hand, which most upland hunters prefer anyway since your empties stay in your pocket instead of the dirt. The 3-inch chambers digest everything from light 2.5-inch target loads to full-house 3-inch field loads, and the manual tang safety sits right where your thumb expects it.
The Turkish walnut stock is where the Drake earns its second looks at the gun club. A traditional pistol grip and snag-free forend carry laser-cut checkering for a sure hold in wet weather, and the 14.5-inch length of pull fits most adult shooters right out of the box. Paired with the deep gloss black chrome metalwork, it's a handsome gun that doesn't need to be babied. Whether it's your first break-action, a lightweight upland companion, or the gun that teaches a new hunter the fundamentals, the Drake in .410 is one of those guns that gets passed around and grinned over every time it comes out of the case.
No, and that's normal for this bore size. While the 12, 20, and 28 gauge Drakes ship with a set of five flush chokes, the .410 version uses fixed improved cylinder and modified chokes. That IC/MOD combo covers most upland and small game situations nicely, and the selectable trigger lets you choose which constriction fires first.
Yes. The Drake has 3-inch chambers, so it handles full-length 3-inch field loads as well as the shorter 2.5-inch shells commonly used for clays and light small game work. That flexibility makes it easy to match your load to the job.
The Drake uses extractor operation, meaning it lifts the spent hulls partway out of the chambers so you can pull them by hand rather than flinging them into the grass. A lot of field hunters prefer this setup since it keeps empties in hand and simplifies the mechanism. It's one less thing to fuss with over years of use.
It's a solid choice. The .410 bore produces very mild recoil, and at roughly 6 pounds the gun is easy to carry and swing all day. Keep in mind the stock has a standard adult 14.5-inch length of pull, so it fits grown shooters as-is, while younger folks may grow into it. The simple break-action design is also great for teaching safe gun handling.
