MTR stands for Match Target Rifle, and CZ took that name seriously. This is the 457 Varmint built for people who care about group size, starting with a match chamber cut to the tightest specification CIP allows. That snug chamber keeps each round aligned dead straight before it enters the bore, which is a big part of why this rifle has a reputation for stacking rounds at 50 yards when fed good target ammo. The 20.5 inch heavy barrel is cold hammer forged with a 1:16 twist, and the extra weight settles beautifully in bags or on a bipod.
The MTR's stock is the kind of walnut you don't mind showing off, but every line of it serves a purpose. The vertical grip has a palm swell and laser stippling for a positive hold, and the wide, flat forend rides a front bag like it was made for it, because it was. Wrap-around stippling up front gives your support hand real traction, and dual QD studs let you run a bipod and sling at the same time. Length of pull sits at 13.75 inches, a comfortable fit for most adult frames.
The 457 platform brings a fully adjustable trigger you can tune for weight, creep, and overtravel right out of the box. Bolt throw is a short 60 degrees, which keeps your knuckles clear of larger scope oculars and lets you mount glass lower on the integrated 11mm dovetail. The receiver-mounted two-position safety is push to fire, and the whole action is shorter and slab-sided compared to the old 455 for less bulk and weight. CZ's swappable barrel system means you can change barrels yourself down the road without a trip to the gunsmith.
At around 7.5 pounds bare, this rifle is happiest on the bench, at NRL22 matches, or on a prone mat chasing tiny groups. Feed it quality match ammo like SK or Eley and the tight chamber pays you back. It ships with one reliable 5-round detachable magazine and no sights, so plan on topping it with a quality scope.
The big one is the chamber. The MTR gets a match chamber cut to the tightest CIP specification, which keeps the cartridge perfectly aligned with the bore for better consistency, especially at longer distances. It also wears an upgraded target-style Turkish walnut stock with a vertical grip, palm swell, laser stippling, and a wide flat forend that the standard Varmint doesn't have.
There are no iron sights on this rifle. The receiver has an integrated 11mm dovetail machined right in, so you can mount rings directly or add a Picatinny adapter rail. The 60 degree bolt throw also gives you extra clearance for scopes with larger ocular bells at lower ring heights.
Yes, and it's one of the best parts of the 457 platform. The trigger is adjustable for pull weight, creep, and overtravel right from the factory, so you can dial it in without buying aftermarket parts. Most owners find a crisp, light break well suited to bench and match work.
The tight match chamber is designed to get the most out of quality target ammunition, so premium loads like SK Match, Eley Match, and similar standard velocity offerings tend to shoot the smallest groups. Published testing has shown sub half inch five-shot averages at 50 yards with match ammo. Bulk plinking loads will run fine, but you'll leave accuracy on the table.
