If you're opening and closing your AR-10 receivers on a regular basis, the aluminum takedown pin hole is quietly taking a beating every single time. A standard steel front takedown pin rides directly against soft aluminum, and over enough cycles that hole starts to elongate and loosen up. The Cross Armory Pin Pal solves that by placing a lubricated captive brass bearing between the pin and the receiver, so the rotational wear transfers to a bearing you can swap instead of the receiver you paid good money for.
The brass alloy bearing presses into the front pivot hole and gives the pin a smooth, self-lubricating surface to rotate on. The takedown pin and locking nut are machined from 4140 ordnance steel and finished in black melonite, which shrugs off corrosion and abrasion better than a bare pin. Everything is built to tight tolerances so the fit stays snug and your upper and lower keep that factory-fresh feel even after a lot of breakdowns.
Installation takes just a few minutes and no specialty tools. You separate the receivers, remove the nut, seed the bearing into the upper with the pin, then gently tap it home with a nylon or rubber mallet. Skip the metal hammer here since it can mar the finish. Once the receivers line up, drop the pin in, get it flush, and snug the nut down. If the pin feels too tight in the bearing, a little work with a small drill bit or sandpaper opens things up without much fuss.
One of the better parts of this setup is that nothing is permanent. If you decide to change your build or sell the rifle, the Pin Pal pulls right back out and returns everything to the manufacturer's original configuration. Worth noting: this AR-10 version is not compatible with the M&P 10, so plan accordingly if that's your platform.
It's built to fit any standard AR-10 configuration chambered in .308 Winchester or 7.62x51mm NATO and installs on virtually all standard AR-10 rifles. The one exception to keep in mind is the Smith & Wesson M&P 10, which this version is not compatible with. If you're running a standard-pattern AR-10, you should be in good shape.

Avoid a metal hammer since it can damage the finish, and if the pin fits too tight you can lightly open the bearing with a small drill bit or sandpaper.
Not at all. The bearing press-fits into place and can be removed just as easily, returning your rifle to its original factory configuration whenever you want. That makes it a low-risk upgrade if you like to change your build or plan to sell down the road.
The brass alloy bearing takes the rotational wear in place of the softer aluminum receiver, so the replaceable bearing wears instead of your lower. Brass rides smoothly against the steel pin and comes pre-lubricated to cut friction. When it eventually wears, you replace an inexpensive bearing rather than an expensive receiver.
