The stock bolt in the M&P 15-22 gets the job done, but if you shoot a lot of rimfire you already know how a stray failure to feed or a stove-pipe can turn a good range session into a wrestling match. Volquartsen built this competition bolt to take those headaches off the table. It's CNC-machined from heat-treated 416 stainless steel and finished with a Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating that makes the whole thing cycle noticeably smoother, so your .22 LR keeps running when the cheap bulk ammo starts getting dirty.
A big part of the appeal here is that it shows up ready to work. The bolt comes with Volquartsen's Exact Edge Extractor already installed, plus their SureStrike Firing Pin and spring in the package. That extractor grabs the rim with a cleaner bite than the factory part, and the firing pin lays down consistent strikes shot after shot. It fits both the 15-22 rifle and the 15-22 pistol, so you're covered either way.
This is a straightforward swap for most folks comfortable pulling their 15-22 apart for cleaning. You reuse your factory bolt carrier, recoil spring, recoil rod, recoil lug, and charging handle, since those pieces aren't part of the kit. Drop the Volquartsen bolt in, reassemble, and you'll feel the difference right away in how it racks and runs.
That DLC finish is doing double duty. That's the main reason it exists. The tighter Exact Edge Extractor and slick DLC-coated bolt help the action cycle more consistently, especially when you're running dirty bulk ammo. It won't fix every ammo-related issue, but it addresses the common function hiccups the factory bolt is known for.
