When a stuck case won't budge no matter how hard you pound the stock on the ground, you need a tool that actually works. Forward Controls Design engineered these compact sectional rods specifically for that frustrating moment when the standard fix fails.
The design starts with a practical problem: original M16 cleaning rods are nearly perfect for clearing obstructions, but they're long, awkward to store, and come with a cumbersome folding T-handle that adds bulk. The CSR solves this by keeping the proven concept while trimming away everything that makes field use difficult. Each rod section maxes out at 4.8 inches, so you can actually carry them in a pack or even throw them in a magazine pouch without thinking about it. No T-handle means no extra weight or complications.
This particular 18-20 inch variant comes with more rod sections than the shorter barrel models, so you can tackle longer rifles without the reach limitations of compact barrels. You get three standard length rods and two shorter segments, giving you flexibility to assemble the exact length you need. The trade-off is that this configuration is too bulky for Vltor or SOPMOD stock storage compartments, so it's built for shooters who'll carry it in dedicated gear.
Every piece is precision machined from 17-4 stainless steel with a bead-blasted matte finish. The included brass jag and serrated ram plug are threaded 8-32 (worth noting: they won't fit USGI 8-36 attachments). This isn't a compromise material choice. Stainless steel gives you a lifetime of use without corrosion concerns, which matters when this tool might sit in your pack or range bag between uses.
Mortaring works sometimes, but when a case is truly stuck, ramming the stock on the ground often fails to dislodge it. That's when you need an actual tool. The CSR lets you apply steady, controlled pressure through the bore to push that stuck case out without risking damage to your rifle or yourself.
The included brass jag lets you attach a cleaning patch if you need to, and the stainless steel construction won't damage your bore like aluminum or parkerized rods can. That said, these are purpose-built for stuck cases first and foremost. For regular bore cleaning, a dedicated cleaning rod gives you better control and fewer joints to worry about damaging the rifling.
The USGI rods work well but they're long, difficult to store, and come with a folding T-handle that adds bulk. The CSR takes the proven concept and makes it portable: compact sections you can assemble quickly, no T-handle, and they fit in a pack. The downside is that they use 8-32 threads instead of USGI's 8-36, so standard military attachments won't fit without an adapter.
The shorter barrel models (10.5-12.5 and 14.5-16 configurations) can fit in Vltor and SOPMOD stock compartments with an included elastic band. The 18-20 inch model is too long and bulky for stock storage, so most users carry it in a pack, range bag, or dedicated pouch.
