Yes. Since .38 Special is the parent case of the .357 Magnum, the Viper runs both interchangeably, including .38 Special +P. A lot of owners practice with softer-shooting .38s and load magnums for defense or field use, which keeps range time cheap and pleasant.
They share the same modern Colt frame and internals, but the Viper trades the King Cobra's rubber grips for checkered walnut and uses a half-lug barrel instead of a full underlug. That trims weight off the muzzle end, so it carries lighter and points faster. Think of it as the more traditional, carry-oriented take on the same platform.
It is. The all-steel construction and the walnut grips that extend below the frame give you plenty to hang onto, and the 4.25 inch barrel tames muzzle blast better than snub-length guns. Recoil with magnums is stout but controllable, and with .38 Special it is downright mild.
