There is something about a blacked-out Colt snub wearing wood grips that just feels right. The Night Cobra Special takes the modern Cobra platform Colt brought back in 2017 and dresses it in a matte black Ion Bond DLC coating over stainless steel, then finishes the look with checkered retro wood grips and the gold Rampant Colt medallion. The result is a revolver that could pass for something out of a detective's shoulder holster decades ago, backed by a build that is thoroughly modern where it counts.
Unlike the standard Night Cobra with its bobbed hammer, this Special variant keeps a full exposed hammer and true double action/single action operation, so you can thumb it back for a light, crisp single action break or run it straight through in double action. Colt's LL2 linear leaf mainspring gives the trigger a smooth, even pull that stacks less than the older small frame Colts, and the frame trench rear paired with a brass bead front sight is quick to pick up against a target. The 2 inch full underlug barrel and all steel construction bring the weight to around 24.8 ounces, which does a nice job soaking up recoil, even with +P loads, which this gun is fully rated to handle.
Six rounds in a package this size is worth pointing out, since most snub revolvers in this class hold five. At 7.25 inches overall, it rides comfortably in a belt holster and handles well for a gun with a barrel this short. It does. The modern Cobra frame fits six rounds of .38 Special in the cylinder, while most competing small frame revolvers in this size class only hold five. That extra round is a nice bonus in a carry gun without adding meaningful bulk.
