The Commander has been Colt's answer to all-day carry since 1950, and this Lightweight version is the reason the idea still works. The frame is forged aluminum alloy instead of steel, which brings the whole pistol in at 29.4 ounces unloaded. That is a real difference you feel by the end of the day, and you give up nothing in the hand because the grip is still full size. The blued carbon steel slide up top keeps the classic Colt look, and the checkered black cherry G10 grips add both grip texture and a little character that plain rubber panels just don't have.
The 4.25 inch barrel splits the difference between a full Government Model and the shorter Officer-size guns, so you keep a useful sight radius and solid velocity out of the .45 ACP without the extra length. Colt's dual spring recoil system takes noticeable edge off the recoil impulse, which matters on an alloy-framed .45, and it stretches spring service life well beyond what a single spring setup delivers. Novak sights with a white dot front and low mount carry rear are a proven pairing that picks up fast and won't snag on a cover garment. The undercut trigger guard and upswept beavertail let you choke up high on the gun, which is where a lot of the control on this pistol comes from.
At 7.75 inches overall with an 8+1 capacity of .45 ACP, this is a legitimate fighting pistol that carries closer to a compact. The extended thumb safety is easy to sweep off on the draw, and the Series 80 firing pin safety adds a mechanical layer of drop protection on top of the grip safety. Single action 1911 triggers are still the standard everything else gets measured against, and Colt has been building them longer than anyone. The aluminum alloy frame brings this pistol to about 29.4 ounces unloaded, compared to roughly 35 to 40 ounces for an all-steel Commander or Government Model. The grip dimensions stay full size, so the weight savings does not cost you anything in handling.
Recoil is a bit livelier than a steel-framed gun, but Colt's dual spring recoil system does a good job smoothing out the impulse. The undercut trigger guard and upswept beavertail also let you get a high grip, which keeps muzzle flip in check. Most people find it very shootable for extended range sessions.
