There are big revolvers, and then there is the Anaconda. Colt brought its largest Snake Gun back in 2021, and this 8 inch stainless version is the full-size expression of the idea: a forged stainless steel frame scaled up from the current Python, chambered in .44 Magnum with a six-round cylinder. At 59 ounces, it has the heft to soak up magnum recoil, and that long vent-rib barrel with full underlug gives it the balance that makes an 8 inch gun feel steadier on target than you might expect.
The heart of this revolver is Colt's Linear Leaf Spring action, the same design that earned the new Python so much praise. The double action pull stays consistent all the way through with none of the stacking older wheelguns were known for, and the single action break is light and crisp. If you have only run mass-market magnum revolvers, the difference is noticeable the first time you cycle it. Independent testing has consistently ranked it among the best factory double action triggers out there.
A red ramp front sight pairs with a fully adjustable rear, and both are interchangeable with a simple Allen key, so you can dial in your preferred sight picture and load. Prefer glass? The frame comes drilled and tapped for optic mounts, which turns this into a legitimate scoped hunting revolver for deer, hogs, or backcountry carry. The recessed target crown protects the muzzle from dings that hurt accuracy, and the 1-in-20 twist barrel stabilizes a wide range of .44 Magnum and .44 Special bullet weights.
The Hogue overmolded rubber grips do real work here, cushioning full-power loads while giving your hand a solid, finger-grooved anchor. They also swap with any current Python grips if you want a different look down the road. The semi-bright stainless finish shrugs off weather and cleans up easily after a day in the field. This is a revolver you buy once and hand down later.
The 2021 redesign builds the Anaconda on an oversized version of the current Python action instead of the old lockwork. The big upgrade is the Linear Leaf Spring trigger, which gives a smooth, non-stacking double action pull and a crisp single action break that outclasses the originals. Modern CNC manufacturing also means tighter, more consistent tolerances than the hand-fit guns of that era.
Yes, the stainless frame comes drilled and tapped from the factory for optic mounts. Plenty of owners set these up with a pistol scope or red dot for handgun hunting, and the 8 inch barrel gives you the velocity and sight radius to take advantage of it. You will just need to pick up a compatible mount and rings separately.
It does. Any revolver chambered in .44 Magnum will safely fire .44 Special, which is a great option for lighter-recoiling practice sessions. The 1-in-20 twist barrel handles a wide range of bullet weights in both cartridges, so you can train affordably and save the full-power magnum loads for hunting or field use.
Better than most people expect. At 59 ounces with a full underlug barrel, the Anaconda's sheer mass absorbs a lot of the punch, and the Hogue overmolded rubber grips cushion what is left. Owners regularly report it handles full-power magnum loads comfortably, and the weight up front keeps muzzle rise manageable for quicker follow-up shots.
