CMMG took a hard look at what a modern 5.56 carbine could be without the usual buffer tube setup, and the Dissent BR4 is the result. Their Compact Action direct impingement system deletes the receiver extension entirely, which lets the rifle wear a Magpul SGA shoulder stock on a Remington 870 pattern interface. The feel is more classic ranch rifle than typical AR, but the guts are pure modern sporting rifle, right down to the standard AR-15 fire control group and STANAG magazine compatibility. It feeds from familiar AR pattern mags and ships with two 10-round Magpul PMAGs in the box.

What the Dissent BR4 Brings to the Bench

The 16.1 inch 4140CM barrel wears a salt bath nitride finish and a 1:7 twist, so it stabilizes everything from light varmint loads up through heavy 77 grain match bullets. Up front you get a CMMG ZEROED muzzle brake on 1/2×28 threads, and the adjustable 0.750 gas block is a big deal if you plan on running a suppressor, since you can tune the system instead of living with an overgassed can host. The reversible, non-reciprocating side charging handle sits where your support hand can reach it without breaking your cheek weld, and it swaps sides for lefties. A ZEROED drop-in single-stage trigger and reversible crossbolt safety round out the controls.

Built Like a CMMG, Handles Like a Classic

Both the Dissent upper and the billet BR4 lower are machined from 7075-T6 aluminum and coated in Armor Black Cerakote, with a 15 inch M-LOK handguard giving you plenty of real estate for lights, bipods, and hand stops. The flattop receiver comes optics ready with no iron sights installed, so budget for a red dot or LPVO. At 8 pounds and 38.1 inches overall, it carries well in the field, and since the lower accepts any Mk4 Dissent upper group, you can swap calibers down the road without starting over. It is a clever rifle that shoots as good as it looks.
