The .40 S&W might not get the spotlight it used to, but there is still a lot to like about the cartridge, and the CMMG Banshee MKGs makes a strong case for it. Out of the 8 inch barrel, .40 S&W picks up velocity you will never see from a handgun-length tube, which turns this compact AR pistol into a legitimately hard hitter for home defense, truck duty, or just an entertaining day at the range. The MKGs lower is built around small-frame Glock pattern magazines, so mags are cheap, everywhere, and proven. CMMG includes a 22 round Glock magazine right in the box.
What separates the Banshee from the pile of straight blowback pistol caliber ARs is CMMG's radial delayed blowback system. Instead of relying on a heavy bolt and stiff buffer to soak up recoil, the rotating bolt delays the action mechanically. The result is a lighter action, less reciprocating mass, and a noticeably smoother recoil impulse, which matters with a snappy round like the .40. The Zeroed linear compensator on the .578×28 threaded muzzle sends blast and concussion forward instead of back at you, a nice touch on a barrel this short.
CMMG did not cut corners on the build. The upper is billet 6061-T6 aluminum, the MKGs lower is forged 7075-T6, and the whole thing wears a durable Armor Black Cerakote finish. The 4140CM barrel gets a salt bath nitride treatment and a medium taper profile. Controls are where this thing shines: the Zeroed 60/90 degree ambidextrous safety, ambi charging handle, drop-in single stage trigger, and Zeroed pistol grip all come standard, so lefties get a fully usable gun out of the box.
The 7 inch EML free-float handguard gives you full-length M-LOK on the sides and bottom plus more between the top Picatinny sections, so lights, lasers, and hand stops all have a home. The MKGs lower is designed around small-frame Glock pattern magazines, and this one ships with a 22 round mag in the box. Just make sure the mags you buy are .40 S&W Glock pattern, since the magazine caliber needs to match the caliber of the upper you are running. Glock 22 and Glock 23 style mags are inexpensive and easy to find, which is a big part of this platform's appeal.
Standard blowback guns use a heavy bolt and buffer to manage recoil, which makes them clunky and snappy. CMMG's radial delayed blowback uses a rotating bolt to mechanically delay the action, cutting reciprocating mass and softening the recoil impulse considerably. With a stout round like .40 S&W, the difference is easy to feel, especially during fast follow-up shots.
No, it ships without sights. The full-length Picatinny top rail makes it easy to mount a red dot, which is what most people run on these, or a set of flip-up backup irons. Given the 8 inch barrel and intended close-to-mid range role, a compact red dot is a natural fit.
It is well suited for it. You get 22+1 rounds of .40 S&W gaining extra velocity from the 8 inch barrel, soft-shooting radial delayed blowback operation, and a linear comp that directs muzzle blast forward, which is welcome indoors.
