Description

The CMMG Dissent BR4 in .338 ARC is one of those rifles that does something genuinely different. Instead of the usual AR layout, it runs CMMG's Compact Action, a bufferless system that packs two recoil springs into the bolt carrier itself. That means no buffer tube sticking out the back, which is why this gun wears a Magpul SGA stock borrowed from the Remington 870 world. The result handles like a shotgun but shoots like an AR, and it gives you a clean, comfortable cheek weld without a pistol grip.

What the .338 ARC Brings to the BR4

The .338 ARC is Hornady's big-bore answer to the .300 Blackout, built on a necked-up 6.5 Grendel case and designed around subsonic performance. Loaded with the 307-grain SUB-X, it leaves a 16-inch barrel around 1,050 fps and delivers roughly 1.5 times the energy of .300 Blackout subsonic. Swap to the 175-grain supersonic load and you get usable range out past 200 yards. Because the cartridge was engineered for consistent pressure, the BR4 cycles both flavors reliably, which is a big deal for anyone who likes running a can one day and reaching out the next.

Features That Make the Dissent BR4 Worth a Look

The 16.1-inch nitride barrel has a 1:8 twist that plays nice with heavier .338 projectiles, and it comes threaded 5/8×24 with a CMMG ZEROED muzzle brake already installed. Up front, the 15-inch M-LOK handguard gives you plenty of real estate for lights, bipods, or a hand stop, with a full-length Picatinny rail on top for your optic. The adjustable gas block lets you dial things in for suppressed or unsuppressed shooting, and the reversible side charging handle plus reversible cross-bolt safety make it friendly for lefties too.

At right around 7.9 pounds and 37.5 inches long, this is a capable setup for short-to-medium range hunting on deer and hogs, property defense where keeping noise down matters, or just having a seriously cool large-bore AR on the range. The ZEROED drop-in trigger rounds it out with a crisp pull that suits both precision and defensive work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Dissent BR4 run both subsonic and supersonic .338 ARC?

Yes, and that's a big part of the appeal. The .338 ARC was engineered for consistent pressure so the rifle cycles reliably with both the 307-grain subsonic SUB-X and the 175-grain supersonic loads. The adjustable gas block lets you fine-tune the gun for your preferred ammo or for running a suppressor.

Why does the CMMG Dissent BR4 use a shotgun stock instead of a normal AR buffer tube?

The Dissent runs CMMG's patented Compact Action, which puts two recoil springs inside the bolt carrier and eliminates the need for a buffer tube in the stock. That opens the door to the Magpul SGA stock built for the Remington 870, giving you solid ergonomics and a good cheek weld without a traditional pistol grip.

What can you hunt with the .338 ARC BR4?

It's a strong short-to-medium range option for medium game like deer and hogs. The subsonic 307-grain load is effective out to roughly 200 yards and delivers about 1.5 times the energy of .300 Blackout subsonic, while the supersonic load stretches your usable range for flatter shots.

Is the Dissent BR4 ready for a suppressor?

It is. The 16.1-inch barrel comes threaded 5/8×24 with a ZEROED muzzle brake already on it, so you can swap to a can when you're ready. Pair the adjustable gas block with subsonic ammo and you've got a quiet, hard-hitting setup.
