The CMMG Dissent Mk4 upper is one of the more interesting takes on the AR platform to come along in a while. Instead of running a buffer tube and recoil spring back into the stock, CMMG tucked the entire action and recoil assembly inside the upper receiver with their patent-pending direct impingement Compact Action. That bufferless setup trims length and weight compared to a traditional build, and it pairs with any mil-spec compatible lower. A 1913 Picatinny rail end plate ships in place of the usual buffer tube, so you can hang a folding stock for a compact carbine or a sling mount for a pistol build.
Chambered in .22 ARC, this upper is built around a 16.1" barrel with a 1:7 twist, which is exactly what Hornady spec'd to stabilize the long, heavy high-BC bullets the cartridge was designed to throw. The .22 ARC uses the same 0.441" case head family as the 6mm ARC and 6.5 Grendel, and it's aimed at delivering roughly .22-250 performance out of a standard AR-15 action. Translation: flat trajectories, mild recoil in the neighborhood of .223, and enough reach to stay useful well past a few hundred yards. It's a natural fit for varmints, target work, and precision-style shooting at distance.
The forward non-reciprocating side charging handle is a genuinely nice touch. You can run the bolt without coming off target or reaching over the optic, and the DI models come with a left-side charger standard (right-side handles are sold separately if you want to swap). The M-LOK handguard with a top Picatinny rail gives you plenty of real estate for optics, bipods, lights, and whatever else your setup calls for.
The adjustable gas block is what ties it all together. Whether you're running a can or just fine-tuning to a specific load, you can dial the gas exactly where you want it so the action isn't over- or under-gassed.
