Bullpup shotguns tend to draw a crowd at the counter, and the Citadel Pup Scout is a big reason why. By moving the action behind the grip, Citadel squeezed a full 18.5 inch barrel into a package that measures just 29 inches overall. That means you keep the ballistic advantage of a longer barrel while getting a shotgun that swings fast, clears doorways and tight corners easily, and stores just about anywhere. It runs on a gas-operated semi-auto action with a 3 inch chamber, feeding from detachable MKA 1919 pattern box magazines, so topping back up is as quick as swapping a mag instead of thumbing shells into a tube.
The Pup Scout wears a metal upper and forend with integral Picatinny rails on top and bottom. The top rail carries a set of folding adjustable front and rear sights that work fine on their own, or you can fold them down and drop on a red dot. The bottom rail handles lights, lasers, or a vertical grip. An adjustable cheek riser lets you dial in your weld whether you're running irons or an optic, and the ambidextrous mag release, charging handle, and safety mean lefties get the same experience as everyone else. The whole gun tips the scales at 8.5 pounds, and that heft does real work soaking up 12 gauge recoil.
This Tactical Gray model ships with three choke tubes, so you can tighten or open your patterns depending on the job. Run a cylinder bore for close work, then screw in a tighter tube when you want to reach out a bit. Between the choke options, the rail space, and the box-fed semi-auto action, the Pup Scout covers a lot of ground for a shotgun this compact, and it does it without emptying your wallet.
The Pup Scout feeds from MKA 1919 pattern detachable box magazines and ships with a 5-round mag. Since that magazine pattern is common among box-fed shotguns, spares are easy to track down. Box feeding also makes reloads a lot quicker than stuffing a tube one shell at a time.
Yes, the top of the receiver has an integral Picatinny rail that accepts red dots and other optics directly. The included front and rear sights fold down out of the way when an optic is mounted, and the adjustable cheek riser helps you get a consistent weld behind whatever sighting setup you choose.
It was designed with that in mind. The magazine release, charging handle, and safety selector are all ambidextrous, so left-handed users can run the gun without awkward workarounds. That's a nice touch you don't always see at this price point.
It has a 3 inch chamber, so it accepts both 2 3/4 and 3 inch 12 gauge shells. Like most gas-operated semi-auto shotguns, it tends to run most reliably with full-power loads, especially during break-in. The three included choke tubes let you pattern different loads to find what your gun likes best.
