The Model 1892 has a strong claim as the smoothest lever gun John Browning ever drew up, and Cimarron's AS622 does the design proper justice. Built on Browning's 1884 patents, the same engineering that produced the big Model 1886, the 1892 was Winchester's answer to the aging Model 1873, scaled down and slicked up for pistol calibers. This carbine version wears a 20 inch round blued barrel, a color case hardened receiver with swirling blues and grays that no two guns share exactly, and genuine walnut furniture. The saddle ring on the left side of the receiver is the detail that gives this configuration its name, a holdover from the days when cowboys lashed their carbines to the rig.
Chambered for .357 Magnum, the AS622 also digests .38 Special, which makes range days easy on the shoulder and the wallet. Yes. The AS622 is chambered for .357 Magnum, which means it also safely fires .38 Special. Plenty of owners practice with cheaper, softer shooting .38s and save the magnums for hunting or when they want more thump. Keep in mind that lever guns with tube magazines can occasionally be picky about very short overall length loads, so it pays to test a few types.
