Description

Most revolvers send the barrel over the top of the cylinder. The Chiappa Rhino does the opposite, firing from the bottom chamber instead. That single design choice drops the bore axis down almost level with your hand, so recoil drives straight back instead of flipping the muzzle skyward. The result is a .357 Magnum you can run fast and keep on target, with follow-up shots that come back on the sights noticeably quicker than a traditional wheelgun. Even shooters who came in skeptical about the looks tend to walk away converted after a cylinder or two.

What Sets the Rhino 60DS Apart

The 60DS is the 6-inch barrel version, which makes it the sweet spot for range work, steel plates, and precision target shooting. Up top you get a fixed red fiber optic front sight paired with a green fiber optic rear that adjusts for windage and elevation, so dialing in your preferred load is simple. The frame is machined from 7075-T6 aluminum alloy, keeping the whole package right around 33 ounces, while the steel barrel and blued steel cylinder handle the pressure side of things. The flat-sided hexagonal cylinder keeps the profile slim, and medium walnut grips give it a classic touch against the black anodized finish.

Smart Details Built Into the Rhino

What looks like a hammer on the Rhino is a cocking lever. The firing mechanism is fully enclosed inside the frame, and a small indicator pops up to show when the internal hammer is cocked. You can run it double action or cock it for a crisp, light single action break when you want to stretch its legs at distance. There is also an accessory rail under the barrel shroud if you want to hang a light or laser on it.

Feeding Your Rhino 60DS

Being chambered in .357 Magnum, it also happily digests .38 Special for cheap, soft-shooting practice sessions. Chiappa includes three moon clips and a removal tool in the box, which make loading and unloading quick at the range. Six rounds on tap, a long sight radius, and recoil control that has to be felt to be believed. This one earns its spot in the safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Chiappa Rhino 60DS shoot .38 Special?

Yes. Since it is chambered in .357 Magnum, the Rhino 60DS handles .38 Special without any issue. A lot of owners do most of their practice with .38s since they are cheaper and softer shooting, then load magnums when they want full power. Combined with the low bore axis, .38 Special out of this gun is remarkably tame.

Does the Rhino really reduce recoil that much?

It does, and it is the number one thing owners comment on. Because the barrel sits at the bottom of the cylinder, recoil pushes straight back into your hand instead of rotating the muzzle upward. You still feel the energy of a .357 Magnum, but muzzle flip is dramatically reduced and follow-up shots come back on target much faster.

Is the hammer on the Rhino 60DS a real hammer?

Not in the traditional sense. The external lever is a cocking device that works an internal hammer enclosed inside the frame. Pull it back for single action or just run the trigger in double action. A small cocked indicator on the frame lets you see the internal hammer status at a glance.

Do I need the included moon clips to fire this revolver?

No, the Rhino 60DS fires .357 Magnum and .38 Special just fine without them since both are rimmed cartridges. The three included moon clips simply speed up loading and unloading, letting you drop in all six rounds at once. A removal tool comes in the box to make swapping spent cases off the clips easy.
