Most revolvers send the recoil up and over your wrist. The Chiappa Rhino 30DS takes a different route. By firing from the bottom chamber of the cylinder instead of the top, the bore sits almost level with your hand, so recoil pushes straight back instead of flipping the muzzle skyward. The result is a .357 Magnum you can run fast, with follow-up shots landing quicker than you'd expect from a wheelgun this size. It also handles .38 Special, which makes range days a lot easier on the hands and the wallet.
The frame is machined from 7075-T6 aluminum alloy, keeping the whole package at a manageable 27.2 ounces, while the steel barrel and cylinder handle the pressure of magnum loads. The flat-sided hexagonal cylinder trims width off the gun, and the fully enclosed firing mechanism means what looks like a hammer is really a cocking lever. Nothing on this revolver wants to snag, and a visible cocked indicator tells you at a glance whether the internal hammer is set. You get true DA/SA operation, with a light, crisp single action pull when you take the time to cock it.
This version wears a bright nickel finish over the frame and cylinder, giving it a classic polished look with solid corrosion resistance to back it up. Up top, a fixed red fiber optic front sight pairs with a green fiber optic rear that adjusts for windage and elevation, so you can dial it in for your preferred load and pick up the sights fast in changing light. Black rubber grips keep things planted when the magnum loads come out.
The 3-inch barrel hits a sweet spot: enough length to get real velocity out of the .357, short enough at 7.5 inches overall to carry comfortably. Chiappa includes three moon clips and a removal tool, so reloads are quicker than fumbling with loose rounds. Yes. Like any .357 Magnum revolver, the Rhino 30DS also chambers .38 Special, including +P loads. Many owners practice with softer-shooting .38s and load .357 Magnum for carry or home defense. With the Rhino's low bore axis, even full magnum loads feel flatter and more controllable than in a conventional revolver.
The bottom-firing design puts the bore almost in line with your hand and forearm, so recoil drives straight back instead of rotating the muzzle upward. You still feel the push of a .357, but muzzle flip is dramatically reduced, which makes fast follow-up shots much easier. It takes a few cylinders to get used to, and most people come away impressed.
Not exactly. The firing mechanism is fully enclosed inside the frame, so the external lever is a cocking device that sets the internal hammer for single action shots. It rides back down after cocking, which keeps the profile snag-free, and a cocked indicator shows you the hammer status at a glance.
No, the cylinder loads and fires fine with loose rounds. The three included moon clips just make reloads faster and let you eject all six spent cases as a single unit. A removal tool comes in the box for popping empties out of the clips.
