Description

Most revolvers fire from the top chamber of the cylinder. The Chiappa Rhino does the opposite, sending the round out of the bottom chamber so the bore sits nearly level with your hand and forearm. That one design choice changes everything about how this gun behaves when it goes off. Recoil comes straight back instead of flipping the muzzle skyward, so your sights settle back on target fast. In a soft-recoiling cartridge like 9mm, the effect is almost comical. This thing just does not move much.

What Sets the Rhino 50SA Apart

This is the single action version of the Rhino, which means you cock it for each shot and get a light, crisp trigger break every time. The lever on the back that looks like a hammer is a cocking device for the fully enclosed internal hammer, and a visible indicator lets you know when the gun is cocked. The frame is machined from 7075-T6 aluminum alloy with a black anodized finish, keeping total weight to a very manageable 1.97 pounds even with the 5 inch steel barrel. The flat-sided six-shot cylinder trims width off the gun, and the vent rib barrel with an integrated bottom rail gives you room for a light or laser if that suits your setup.

Shooting the Chiappa Rhino 9mm

Since 9mm is a rimless cartridge, the Rhino runs on moon clips, and Chiappa includes three of them plus a shell removal tool in the box. Loading a full clip of six at once beats feeding chambers one at a time, and ejection is just as quick. The sight setup is genuinely good for a revolver: a red fiber optic up front paired with a rear that adjusts for both windage and elevation, so you can dial it in for your preferred load and hold dead on. Medium walnut grips give it a warm, classic look against the black frame and fill the hand nicely.

Between the low bore axis, the flat shooting 9mm chambering, and that clean single action trigger, the Rhino 50SA is one of the most pleasant centerfire revolvers you can spend a range day behind. It draws a crowd at the firing line too, because nothing else out there looks or shoots quite like it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Chiappa Rhino fire from the bottom of the cylinder?

Firing from the bottom chamber drops the bore axis down almost in line with your hand and forearm. That geometry sends recoil straight back instead of levering the muzzle upward, which cuts muzzle flip dramatically and gets your sights back on target faster. Combined with the mild 9mm cartridge, this is one of the softest shooting centerfire revolvers around.

Does the Rhino 50SA 9mm require moon clips?

Yes, because 9mm is a rimless cartridge, the Rhino uses moon clips to load and eject reliably. Chiappa includes three moon clips and a shell removal tool with the revolver, so you are set up right out of the box. Spare clips are inexpensive and make reloads at the range quick since you drop all six rounds in at once.

Is the hammer on the Rhino 50SA a real hammer?

The external lever is a cocking device rather than a traditional hammer. The actual hammer is fully enclosed inside the frame, which gives the Rhino a snag-resistant profile, and a cocked indicator shows you the internal hammer status at a glance. On this single action model, you cock it for each shot, and the payoff is a light, crisp trigger break.

Are the sights on the Chiappa Rhino 50SA adjustable?

Yes, the rear sight adjusts for both windage and elevation and features green fiber optic inserts, paired with a fixed red fiber optic front sight. That contrast makes for fast sight acquisition, and the adjustability lets you zero the gun for your favorite 9mm load. It is a genuinely useful setup whether you are punching paper or ringing steel.
