There is no mistaking a Rhino for anything else, and the Nebula version takes that even further. The rainbow PVD finish shifts color across the frame, barrel shroud, and cylinder, set off by blue laminate grips that tie the whole look together. But the flashy exterior is only half the story. This is the same clever engineering that made the Rhino famous: the barrel sits at the bottom of the frame and fires from the six o'clock chamber of the cylinder, putting recoil straight back into your hand and arm instead of flipping the muzzle skyward. With full-power .357 Magnum loads, the difference is something you feel on the very first shot.
The frame is machined from 7075-T6 aluminum alloy, keeping the whole revolver right around 1.7 pounds, while the barrel and hexagonal six-round cylinder are steel where it counts. The flat-sided cylinder also keeps the profile slimmer than a traditional round cylinder, which is a nice bonus for a 3 inch gun. This version runs a crisp single action trigger, and what looks like a hammer is really a cocking lever, with a small indicator flag that pops up to show when the gun is cocked. It also digests .38 Special, so you can run soft-recoiling practice loads all day and save the magnums for when you want them.
Up top you get a fixed red fiber optic front paired with a rear that is adjustable for windage and elevation with green fiber optic inserts, a bright and quick setup in most lighting. Chiappa also packs in a leather holster and three moon clips, which speed up loading and make ejecting spent brass a one-motion affair.
Between the flat shooting design, the six-round capacity, and a finish that draws a crowd at the range, the Rhino 30DS Nebula is one of those revolvers people buy because nothing else scratches the same itch. It shoots as different as it looks, and that is exactly the point.
Yes. Like any .357 Magnum revolver, it happily runs .38 Special, which is a great way to keep range sessions cheap and easy on the hands. The low bore axis already softens .357 recoil noticeably, and with .38s this thing is downright pleasant.
The Rhino fires from the bottom chamber of the cylinder instead of the top, which puts the bore nearly in line with your wrist and forearm. That geometry sends recoil straight back rather than rotating the muzzle upward, so muzzle flip is dramatically reduced and follow-up shots come back on target faster. It feels odd for the first cylinder or two, then it just feels flat.
This particular model, sometimes listed as the 30SAR, is single action only, so you cock it for each shot. The lever on the back that looks like a hammer is really a cocking device, and a small red flag rises from the frame to show when the gun is cocked. The upside is a light, crisp trigger break every time.
Chiappa includes a leather holster and three moon clips with this model. The moon clips hold a full six rounds together, which makes loading quicker and lets you eject all your spent brass in one motion.
