Some guns are built for the range, and some are built to ride along until you need them. The Chiappa M6 Combo is firmly in the second camp. It's a modern take on the classic Air Force survival gun, pairing an 18.5 inch 12 gauge barrel with a 3 inch chamber over an 18.5 inch .22 LR barrel in one break-open package. Push down on the trigger guard and the whole gun folds in half to roughly the length of its barrels, which makes it a natural fit behind a truck seat, strapped to a pack frame, or tucked into a cargo box on the ranch.
Each barrel on the M6 gets its own trigger, so switching from a .22 round for small game to a 12 gauge load is as simple as moving your finger. Opening the action cocks the internal hammers, and a manual thumb safety keeps things simple in the field. The 12 gauge barrel is threaded for Rem Choke tubes and ships with a modified choke installed, so you're not locked into one pattern. Sights are practical too: a fixed red fiber optic up front paired with an adjustable M1 carbine style rear that picks up quickly in dim light.
The skeletonized steel buttstock wraps around a molded closed-cell foam insert that holds three 12 gauge shells and five .22 rimfire cartridges, and a cleaning kit stores neatly in the stock as well. Picatinny rail on the receiver plus a quad-rail forend give you room for a red dot, light, or laser if you want to dress it up.
At 5.8 pounds and 34.6 inches deployed, this is a gun you'll take along instead of leaving home. For pilots, ranchers, trappers, and backcountry wanderers, one compact firearm that handles both shot and rimfire duty covers a lot of ground.
Pushing down on the trigger guard breaks the action open and lets the gun fold in half, bringing it down to roughly the 18.5 inch barrel length. That's compact enough for a backpack, pannier, or behind-the-seat storage. Unfolded, it measures 34.6 inches overall and weighs 5.8 pounds.
The M6 uses two separate triggers, one dedicated to each barrel. The front trigger fires one barrel and the rear fires the other, so there's no selector button to fumble with. Opening the action cocks both internal hammers, and a manual thumb safety rounds out the controls.
