The Charter Arms Coyote answers a question a lot of folks have been asking: why not put the soft-shooting .380 ACP in a revolver? Built on Charter's proven small frame, this five-shot wheelgun pairs a 7075 aluminum frame with a 416 stainless steel barrel and cylinder, keeping the whole package at a very carry-friendly 14 ounces. The .380 cartridge kicks noticeably less than .38 Special in a lightweight snubbie, and the factory porting on the 2-inch barrel tames muzzle flip even further. Add in the diamond cuts on the barrel underlug that shave weight, and you get a little revolver that stays flat and comes back on target quickly.
This version of the Coyote wears a lavender anodized frame set against high-polish stainless components and checkered rosewood grips, and the combination looks sharp in person. It runs as a traditional double action and single action revolver with an exposed spur hammer, so you can thumb it back for a lighter, crisper trigger pull when you want it. Fixed sights, a swing-out cylinder, and a transfer bar safety keep operation simple and dependable, and Charter's solid frame design skips the side plate found on most small revolvers for added strength.
Since .380 ACP is a rimless cartridge, the Coyote ships with two moon clips that hold all five rounds together. They pull double duty, acting as a built-in speed loader on the way in and letting the ejector kick out all the empties at once on the way out. Reloads end up faster than fumbling loose rounds into a cylinder, which is a nice bonus on a defensive revolver.
At 14 ounces with a 2-inch barrel, this one disappears in a holster or a bag without weighing you down. It shares dimensions with Charter's Undercover line, so holsters made for those revolvers and similar small frames tend to fit well. For best results, yes. The .380 ACP case has no rim, so the moon clips are what let the ejector kick out spent cases, and they also make reloading all five rounds at once quick and easy. The revolver will fire without clips since the cartridge headspaces on the case mouth, but you would need to pick out the empties by hand and ignition may not be as consistent. Two clips come in the box and extras are available from Charter Arms.
It is noticeably milder. A 14-ounce .38 snubbie can be snappy, especially with +P loads, while the .380 delivers a much softer push in the same size gun. Combined with the factory barrel porting, the Coyote is easy to control in rapid fire, which makes it a great fit for newer revolver owners or anyone sensitive to recoil.
In most cases, yes. The Coyote is built on the same frame as Charter's Undercover series, so holsters made for those revolvers fit right, and many holsters sized for common small-frame five-shot snubbies like the S&W J-frame work well too. With its 2-inch barrel and light weight, it carries comfortably in belt, pocket, or bag setups.
