Description

The Double Dog is one of the more clever ideas to come out of Charter Arms in a while. Take their proven Mag Pug .357 Magnum frame, then toss in a second cylinder from the Pit Bull line chambered in 9mm Luger. Swap the cylinders and the same revolver goes from running full-house magnums or .38 Special to feeding on the most affordable centerfire ammo on the shelf. Both cylinders have their calibers laser engraved right on them, so there's never any guessing about which one is in the gun.

Two Cylinders, No Moon Clips

The part that usually sells people on the Double Dog combo is the 9mm cylinder. Instead of fumbling with moon clips like most rimless-cartridge revolvers, Charter uses a spring-tensioned extractor system with detents that grab each 9mm case, so loading and ejection work without any extras. Swapping cylinders takes about a minute: open the action, back out the single crane screw at the front of the frame, roll one cylinder assembly out and the other in. Charter even ships spare crane screw washers in the box so you're covered for plenty of swaps.

Built Like a Carry Gun Should Be

This is the 2.2 inch snubnose version, and at roughly 22 to 23 ounces of all stainless steel construction, it rides comfortably in a holster while still soaking up recoil better than the featherweight alloy snubs. The ported barrel with diamond cuts vents gas upward to tame muzzle rise, which you'll appreciate the first time you touch off a .357 load. Checkered walnut boot grips fill the hand nicely, the fixed sights are snag-free and simple, and the double action/single action trigger gives you an exposed hammer for deliberate single action shots when you want them. A transfer bar keeps the action drop-safe.

Why the Double Dog Makes Sense

Carry it loaded with .357 Magnum or .38 Special, then swap to the 9mm cylinder for cheap practice sessions at the range. It's an American-made revolver backed by Charter's transferable lifetime warranty, and the flexibility means it earns its keep whether it's riding in a holster or getting passed around at the range on a Saturday.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need moon clips to shoot 9mm in the Charter Arms Double Dog?

No, and that's one of the best parts of this revolver. The 9mm cylinder uses Charter's patented extractor system with spring-loaded detents that hold the rimless cases in place, so rounds load and eject cleanly without clips. Just press each round down until it seats and you're ready to go.

How hard is it to swap cylinders on the Double Dog?

It's a quick job that only takes a minute or two once you've done it. With the gun unloaded and the action open, remove the single crane screw at the front of the frame, slide out the cylinder and crane assembly, then install the other one and tighten the screw back down. Charter includes spare crane screw washers in the box, and both cylinders are laser engraved with their calibers so they're easy to tell apart.

Can the Double Dog shoot .38 Special as well as .357 Magnum?

Yes. The .357 Magnum cylinder handles .38 Special and .38 Special +P just fine, which is standard for any .357 revolver. That gives you three caliber options total with this combo: .357 Magnum, .38 Special, and 9mm Luger.

Is the Double Dog a reasonable size for concealed carry?

It is. The 2.2 inch snubnose barrel, five-shot cylinder, and compact boot-style walnut grips keep the overall footprint in the same class as other small-frame carry revolvers. At around 22 to 23 ounces of stainless steel, it carries a bit more heft than alloy-frame snubs, but that extra weight pays you back with softer recoil, especially with magnum loads.
