The Boomer is what happens when Charter Arms takes their famous .44 Special Bulldog and strips it down to the bare essentials for concealed carry. Everything that could catch on a cover garment is gone. The hammer sits flush with the frame for double action only operation, the 2 inch barrel tapers toward the muzzle with no front sight post to hang up, and the whole profile is built around one job: coming out of a pocket or waistband without drama. A fixed rear sight groove stays machined into the frame, so you still have a reference point for aiming at defensive distances.
Five rounds of .44 Special out of a 20 ounce revolver sounds like a handful, and Charter Arms thought of that too. The tapered barrel is ported on top, venting gas upward to fight muzzle rise and take the sting out of full power loads. Pair that with the full rubber combat grip and this little five-shooter is far more manageable than the caliber suggests. The .44 Special has earned its reputation as a serious defensive round, throwing a heavy, wide bullet at moderate velocity, which also means less blast and snap than the lightweight magnum snubs.
This version of the Boomer wears a black nitride treatment over its steel frame, cylinder, and barrel. Nitride is a surface hardening process, not just a coating, so it shrugs off holster wear, sweat, and daily handling better than traditional bluing. It also gives the gun a low-profile, all-black look that suits its purpose. Like every Charter Arms revolver, the Boomer is American made and uses a transfer bar system, so it only fires with a deliberate pull of the trigger.
Plenty of snub guns carry easy. Not many carry this easy while launching a .44 caliber bullet. If you like the Bulldog concept but want it slicked up for real-world carry, the Boomer is that gun, and grips are interchangeable with standard Bulldog options if you ever want to swap.
It gets your attention, but it is more manageable than you might expect from a 20 ounce big bore snub. The barrel porting vents gas upward to cut muzzle flip, and the rubber combat grip soaks up a good share of the push. The .44 Special is also a moderate pressure round, so you get big bullet performance without magnum-level blast and snap.
There is no front sight post, which is intentional so nothing snags on the draw. The frame still has a fixed rear notch and sighting groove machined into the topstrap, giving you a usable reference for aiming. At the close defensive distances this revolver is built for, that setup works fine.
