The .44 Special has earned its keep as a defensive round for over a century, and it throws a heavy, wide bullet without the sharp blast of a magnum cartridge. To help tame it in a compact gun, Charter Arms cut two ports into the top of the barrel that vent gases upward and knock down muzzle flip between shots. Pair that with the compact rubber grip and the double action only trigger, and you have a revolver that points naturally and runs the same way every time you press the trigger. No slide to rack, no safety to fumble, no magazine to seat.
At 24 ounces with a 6 inch overall length and a 4.5 inch height, the Boomer rides comfortably in a pocket holster or inside the waistband, and the rounded, hammerless profile keeps printing to a minimum. Like every Charter Arms revolver, it uses a one-piece frame for durability, it is built by hand in Shelton, Connecticut, and it is backed by a lifetime warranty. It has some push, no way around that with a big-bore snub nose, but it is far more manageable than most people expect. The .44 Special runs at much lower pressure than a .357 Magnum, and the two ports on top of the barrel vent gases upward to cut muzzle flip.
