There is something refreshing about a shotgun with one job. The Charles Daly 101 in 20 gauge is a break-open single shot with a 20 inch barrel and a 3 inch chamber, wrapped in a black synthetic stock that shrugs off rain, mud, and truck bed abuse. At roughly five pounds, it carries like nothing at all, which matters a lot more than people think once you are a mile into the timber chasing a bird that will not commit.
This version of the 101 is set up for close, deliberate work. The barrel is threaded for Beretta/Benelli Mobil-pattern chokes and ships with an Extra Full (XXF) tube, so you are patterning tight right out of the box. Up top, a fiber optic front sight grabs light in dim spring mornings, and the receiver-mounted Picatinny rail gives you a spot to add a red dot if you want to dial in those dense modern turkey loads. A 3 inch 20 gauge shell through a tight choke does serious work at realistic calling distances, with a lot less shoulder punishment than a 12.
The break-open action could not be more straightforward. Crack it open, drop a shell in, close it, and you are ready. The extractor lifts spent hulls for easy removal, and there is very little to clean or fuss over at the end of the day. That simplicity also makes the 101 a natural fit for newer hunters learning the ropes, since loading and unloading are about as clear-cut as it gets.
Spring turkey is the obvious use, but this thing also makes a handy blind gun, a lightweight small game companion, and a solid loaner for camp. It takes up almost no room in the safe and rides easily behind a seat or strapped to a pack. For anyone who likes gear that does one thing well without any extra bulk, the 101 is an easy gun to like.

Yes. This model has a Picatinny rail mounted on the receiver, so most compact red dots will bolt right on. That pairing works really well with the tight XXF choke, since a dot makes it much easier to center a dense pattern on a turkey's head at closer ranges.
It does. The chamber is cut for 3 inch shells, so it will run magnum turkey loads as well as standard 2.75 inch field and target loads. Keep in mind it is a light gun at around five pounds, so heavy 3 inch loads will let you know they went off.
