There's something to be said for a shotgun that just does its job. The Charles Daly 101 is a break-action single shot 20 gauge with a 3" chamber, a 26" barrel, and zero complications. Drop a shell in, close the action, and go. The trigger is a simple single-stage setup, the manual safety is easy to find with your thumb, and traditional extractors lift spent hulls clear so you can pluck them out and reload without fuss. It's the kind of gun that gets handed down, tossed behind the truck seat, and carried through more seasons than most.
The 20 gauge chambering is a sweet spot for a lightweight single shot. Recoil stays manageable for newer or smaller-framed folks, but with 3" shells on tap you've still got plenty of punch for squirrels, rabbits, doves, and even turkeys with the right load. The 26" barrel gives you a smooth swing on flushing birds, and the fixed brass bead up front keeps the sight picture about as simple as it gets. The checkered black synthetic stock and forend shrug off rain, mud, and bumps that would leave a wood stock looking rough.
Instead of a fixed choke, this 101 is threaded for the Beretta/Benelli Mobil (MC-1) pattern, one of the most widely available choke systems out there. A Modified tube comes installed, which is a solid all-around choice, and swapping to a tighter or more open pattern is as easy as a trip to just about any gun counter.
At around 7 pounds with a 41.75" overall length, the 101 carries easily on long walks and stores without taking up much room.
