The Charles Daly 101 is a break action single shot 12 gauge that does exactly what a field gun should do: open smooth, extract reliably, and handle whatever weather you drag it through. The checkered black synthetic stock and forend shrug off rain and briars, and the gloss black receiver keeps the whole package looking sharp season after season. At right around 6 pounds, it carries easy on long walks and comes up quick when a bird flushes.
The 28-inch barrel gives you a nice long sight plane and smooth swing, and the 3-inch chamber means you can run everything from light target loads to heavier hunting shells. The barrel is threaded for Beretta/Benelli Mobil pattern chokes, which is a genuinely useful detail on a gun in this class. Mobil chokes are everywhere, so tightening up for turkey or opening up for close-flushing quail is cheap and easy. A modified choke tube comes installed, which is a sensible do-it-all constriction right out of the box. Up top, a simple brass bead front sight keeps your eye on the target instead of on hardware.
A traditional extractor lifts spent hulls clear for easy removal, a single trigger and manual safety keep the controls dead simple, and the break open action makes it obvious at a glance whether the gun is loaded. That simplicity is exactly why single shots like this end up as first shotguns, truck guns, camp guns, and loaners that get passed around for decades. The 101 uses the Beretta/Benelli Mobil choke thread pattern, one of the most common threadings out there. A modified (MC-1) tube comes installed, and aftermarket Mobil pattern tubes from full to cylinder are easy to find if you want to tailor your pattern for turkey, waterfowl, or clays.
Yes, it has a 3-inch chamber, so it handles both 2-3/4 inch and 3-inch 12 gauge shells. Just keep in mind that at around 6 pounds with no gas system to soak up recoil, heavy magnum loads will let you know they went off. Standard field and target loads are very manageable.
It is one of the better choices for learning. The break action makes it easy to see when the gun is loaded, the controls are simple, and having a single shell teaches good shot discipline. The synthetic stock also takes the dings and scrapes that come with learning without any heartbreak.
This model uses a traditional extractor, which lifts the spent hull partway out of the chamber when you break the action open so you can pull it free by hand. Some folks prefer this over an ejector since your empties stay in hand instead of flying into the brush.
