This plate is built from 3/8" AR500-comparable steel, the thickness that handles centerfire pistols and rifles without pitting or denting when you keep it at proper distance. The edges are laser cut for a clean, consistent shape, and the whole face wears a bright powder coating that fights rust and stays visible against dirt, brush, or a far-off berm. A quick shot of spray paint between sessions makes fresh hits pop right back out.
The gong comes with holes sized for 1/2" carriage bolts, so it drops onto most standard target stands or a homemade 2×4 rig without any fuss. For the best life out of the steel, hang it so it can swing freely and angle the face slightly downward toward the ground. That movement spreads out the impact energy and helps direct any splatter down where it belongs. Rubber straps are a popular way to hang it since they let the target move, cut down on hardware wear, and keep that clean ring going.
Twelve inches is a sweet spot size. It's big enough to find easily at distance for rifle work, yet small enough to stay a challenge up close with a handgun. Keep pistols at 10 yards or more and rifles back at 100-plus, and this gong will give you years of range days. It's a straightforward, durable target that rewards good shooting and asks for very little in return.
The 3/8" steel is rated for centerfire pistols and rifles, so it handles common handgun rounds and standard rifle cartridges when used at safe distances. Keep pistols back at least 10 yards and rifles at 100 yards or more to protect both the steel and yourself. Avoid steel-core or armor-piercing ammo, which can damage the face.
