Description

CCI took what made their Clean-22 coating a hit in 22 LR and brought it up into magnum territory with this 46 grain Segmented Hollow Point load for 22 WMR. It is currently the only segmenting hollow point bullet made for this caliber, and that design does something pretty different from a standard jacketed hollow point. Instead of just mushrooming, the bullet is engineered to split into three equal size pieces on contact, tripling the number of wound channels compared to a typical expanding bullet.

What Makes the Maxi-Mag Segmented HP Different

That polymer coating covering the bullet is not just for looks, though the olive drab tint does give it a purpose built hunting appearance. It allows the segments to separate at lower velocities and longer distances than you would get from a conventional copper jacket, which matters a lot with a rimfire round since velocity drops off quickly downrange. Varmint hunters going after prairie dogs, ground squirrels, or fur bearers at extended yardage get a bullet that still performs even when the shot is not close.

Clean-22 Coating Keeps the Maxi-Mag Running Right

Beyond terminal performance, the same coating tackles a problem every rimfire shooter deals with eventually: fouling. It cuts down on copper and lead buildup in the bore without leaving behind a sticky residue, and for anyone shooting suppressed, it reduces lead accumulation inside the can by 60 to 80 percent. Less scrubbing at the bench and a cleaner suppressor over time.

Under the hood this is still a Maxi-Mag through and through, with a brass case, CCI's dependable priming, and propellant tuned for consistent ballistics shot after shot. CCI states this load cycles reliably through semi-automatics as well as bolt guns and revolvers chambered in 22 WMR, and the bullet geometry was shaped with accuracy in mind rather than just terminal effect. Muzzle velocity comes in around 1875 fps with 359 ft-lbs of energy, giving this 46 grain load a solid balance of speed and knockdown power for small and medium sized varmints.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Maxi-Mag Segmented Hollow Point different from a regular 22 WMR hollow point?

Instead of just expanding into a mushroom shape, this bullet is designed to break into three equal size pieces on impact. That creates three separate wound channels rather than one, which can help put down varmints faster. The polymer coating lets this happen even at the lower velocities you might see at longer range.

Will this ammo cycle reliably in a semi-automatic 22 WMR rifle or pistol?

CCI designed this load with reliable cycling in mind for semi-automatics as well as bolt actions and revolvers chambered in 22 WMR. The bullet geometry and consistent CCI priming help keep function smooth across different platforms. As with any rimfire round, results can vary slightly by firearm and magazine, but this load was built with dependable feeding as a priority.

What is the Clean-22 coating actually doing on this bullet?

It is a polymer coating that cuts down on copper and lead fouling in the barrel compared to an uncoated bullet, and it does this without leaving a gummy residue behind. If you shoot suppressed, that same coating reduces lead buildup inside the can by 60 to 80 percent. Less cleaning for you either way.

What kind of game or targets is this 46 grain load best suited for?

This round was built with varmint and small game hunting in mind, think prairie dogs, ground squirrels, foxes, and similar sized critters. The segmenting design creates more internal damage than a standard round nose or basic hollow point, so it is a solid pick when quick, ethical kills matter. It also handles longer range shots better than many rimfire loads since the segments still separate even as velocity drops.
