Turkey hunters running a Benelli Crio or Crio Plus 20 gauge know the little bores can hit way above their weight with the right glass out front. This is where the Carlson's Long Beard Turkey Choke earns its keep. It threads into Crio and Crio Plus barrels, carries a .568 turkey constriction, and is machined from 17-4 stainless steel with a black finish that shrugs off weather and cleaning solvents season after season.
This one was purpose-built around Winchester's Long Beard XR loads and their Shot-Lok resin, which keeps lead pellets rounder as they leave the muzzle for tighter, more even patterns downrange. The tube runs an extended profile with a longer parallel section than most factory chokes, and that extra straight run is what stacks pellets into a dense core well past 40 yards. Pair it with those XR shells and you've got a combo that consistently prints heavy, killing patterns at ranges where a stock choke starts thinning out.
The ported design isn't just for looks. Horizontal slots at the muzzle let gas bleed off early, which helps knock down muzzle jump and takes some of the sting out of stout turkey loads. On a light 20 gauge with a heavy 3-inch shell in the pipe, that little bit of help getting back on target is welcome.
At roughly 7.85 inches overall it stands about an inch proud of the muzzle, so you get the benefit of the extended geometry without turning your gun into a fence post. Run it with lead, copper, nickel plated, bismuth, or Hevi-Shot, just keep steel shot no larger than #4 out of any turkey choke. Yes. This tube is cut for the Benelli Crio and Crio Plus thread pattern in 20 gauge, so it drops right into those barrels. Double check that your barrel is marked Crio or Crio Plus, since Benelli also used a Mobil thread on some older or non-Crio models that takes a different tube.
It was designed around the Long Beard XR loads and tends to pattern beautifully with them, but it isn't locked to that one shell. You can run lead, copper, nickel plated, bismuth, or Hevi-Shot through it. Just avoid steel shot larger than #4 in any turkey choke, and pattern a couple of loads to see which your gun prefers.
The .568 turkey constriction squeezes the shot column into a tight, dense pattern for reaching out to a gobbler's head and neck. The porting bleeds gas off at the muzzle to cut down on jump and recoil, which is a nice touch on a lightweight 20 gauge running heavy turkey loads.
The tube is about 7.85 inches overall and extends roughly an inch beyond the end of your barrel. That extended profile and longer parallel section are part of what helps tighten the pattern downrange without adding much length to the gun.
