This one is dialed in for the ducks and geese that hang up just out of reach of your cylinder bore. The Carlsons Delta Waterfowl Mid-Range choke fits Retay 12 gauge shotguns and carries a .705 constriction, which puts it right in the sweet spot for shots in that 25 to 40 yard window. It's the tube a lot of marsh hunters reach for when birds are working the decoys but not committing all the way in.
The secret to how it patterns is the parallel section, which runs about 25 percent longer than what you get on most factory tubes. That extra length gives the shot column more time to settle before it leaves the muzzle, so you end up with tighter cores and fewer stray flyers. Steel shot loves a longer parallel section, and this design lets you run larger steel through a tighter constriction without beating up your barrel.
Machined from 17-4 stainless steel, this tube extends about 3/4 inch past the muzzle. That extension does double duty. It takes the abuse from prolonged steel shot use so your barrel threads don't, and the knurled grip lets you swap tubes by hand without digging around for a wrench. Constriction and size are laser marked right on the body, so there's no guessing which tube is in the safe when you're loading up before daylight.
All steel shot sizes are cleared for the mid-range tube, which makes it a flexible pick across different loads. That said, do yourself a favor and pattern your gun with the exact shell you plan to hunt. Different brands and pellet counts throw differently through the same choke, and ten minutes at a pattern board tells you more than any chart. Carlsons builds these in the USA and backs them with a lifetime warranty, so it's a tube you can hunt hard for years.
This tube is cut for the Retay thread pattern in 12 gauge. Make sure your shotgun uses the Retay choke system before ordering, since choke threads vary between manufacturers. You can usually find that info stamped on the barrel or in your owner's manual.
The mid-range .705 constriction is built for shots in the 25 to 40 yard range. That covers a lot of real-world waterfowl situations where birds are working the spread but not dropping right into your lap. If you're hunting tight over decoys, a close-range tube fits better, and for reaching birds past 40 yards a long-range tube is the call.
Yes, all steel shot sizes are approved for the mid-range tube. The longer parallel section and 17-4 stainless build are made with steel shot in mind, and the extended body helps protect your barrel from wear. It handles other non-toxic loads well too.
No wrench required for hand tightening thanks to the knurled extension that sticks out past the muzzle. It's easy to grip and swap in the field or the blind. A choke wrench is still handy to check that it's seated snug before you head out.
