Description

Most chronographs tell you one number and call it a day. The Caldwell VelociRadar goes further by using CHIRP radar to follow your projectile out to 100 yards downrange, which lets it calculate true muzzle velocity, ballistic coefficient, and downrange energy all from where you're sitting. That means no light screens, no fussing with lighting conditions, and no trip downrange to set up and risk putting a round through your own equipment. You get a complete ballistic picture instead of a single data point, and the claimed muzzle velocity accuracy lands within plus or minus 0.1 percent.

What Sets the VelociRadar Apart at the Bench

It reads just about anything you can launch, from rifle rounds screaming past 4,000 fps all the way to arrows, with a working range that covers roughly 250 to 4,500 fps. That makes it a genuine do-it-all unit for rifles, shotguns, handguns, airguns, and archery. There's a built-in acoustic trigger for standard shooting, plus an included recoil-activated trigger you clip to the gun for suppressed, covered, or busy indoor ranges where sound alone can get confused. An integrated peep sight helps you line the radar up on target so your reads stay consistent.

Reading Data and Running the Caldwell VelociRadar App

The 2.8-inch color screen is bright and easy to read, and the physical buttons are a nice touch for anyone who's tired of fighting a touchscreen with cold hands. Series stats like max, min, average velocity, standard deviation, and extreme spread are right there on the display. Bluetooth connects it to the free Caldwell app for iOS and Android, where you can store up to 100 sessions with up to 100 shots each, log weather, and even generate a custom DOPE chart for your specific load.

Build and Power on the VelociRadar

This is a hefty, well-armored unit with rubber corner protection and a sturdy polymer housing, so a bump at the range won't send you into a panic. It runs off an internal rechargeable Li-ion battery charged over USB-C, which means no stopping to swap AAs mid-session, and battery life holds up well through a full day of load development.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the VelociRadar different from a regular light-screen chronograph?

Instead of reading velocity as a bullet passes through light sensors, the VelociRadar uses CHIRP radar to track the projectile downrange out to 100 yards. That lets it calculate true muzzle velocity, ballistic coefficient, and downrange energy rather than just a single speed number. It also works in any lighting and sets up right beside you, so there's no walking downrange or waiting for a cold range.

Can the Caldwell VelociRadar work with suppressed firearms?

Yes. The unit has a built-in acoustic trigger for standard shooting, but it also comes with a recoil-activated trigger you attach to the firearm. That sensor uses recoil to trigger the reading, which keeps things reliable when you're shooting suppressed, indoors, or at a busy range where the microphone might pick up someone else's shot.

What can it measure besides rifle rounds?

The VelociRadar is built to read a wide range of projectiles, covering roughly 250 to 4,500 fps. That means rifles, shotguns, handguns, airguns, and even archery are all fair game. It's a solid pick if you shoot multiple disciplines and want one device to cover all of them.

How does the Caldwell app work with the VelociRadar?

The chronograph connects over Bluetooth to the free Caldwell app for iOS and Android. From your phone you can view and store shot strings, track up to 100 sessions, review series stats like standard deviation and extreme spread, and generate a custom DOPE chart for your load. It's a handy way to keep your range data organized without writing everything down by hand.
