At the center is a centerfire rifle rated 18×24 inch AR500 gong measuring 3/8 inch thick, hung on nylon reinforced rubber straps that soak up impact and hold up shot after shot. That combination of hardened steel and flexible mounting is what keeps a gong swinging instead of cratering.
The real trick here is the included Flash Bang hit indicator. It packs 10 ultra-bright green LED lights that strobe every time a round smacks the plate, and they stay visible for thousands of yards even in bright daylight. Naked eye, you can pick up the flash out to around a mile, and through a spotting scope or optic it reaches even farther. It attaches to the back of the target with heavy-duty hook and loop and runs on three AA batteries, which are included in the box. This version features an adjustable switch, letting you dial in a quick one second flash for rapid strings or a longer six second strobe when you are stretching the distance.
Rather than shipping a bulky pre-welded frame, Caldwell includes steel frame hubs that slot onto standard 2×4 lumber, which you supply. That keeps shipping reasonable and lets you build a stand at whatever width and height suits your range. Grab a few boards from the hardware store and you can have a custom rig standing in minutes, then break it down and store the hubs when you are done.
