Brenneke set out to build a slug that hunters could trust in lead-free country without giving up any of the knockdown power that made their name, and the TKO is the result. TKO stands for Tin KnockOut, and yes, the projectile really is made of tin. It was the first lead-free slug engineered to run in both rifled and smoothbore barrels using any choke, so you don't have to keep separate loads on hand for different guns.
This 2 3/4" 12 gauge load pushes a 2/3 ounce, roughly 292 grain tin slug out of the muzzle at 2,001 fps, generating about 2,607 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle. That combination of light-for-gauge weight and serious velocity means a flat trajectory and a hard hit. The tin point carries ribs designed to pass smoothly through any choke, and the patented rear section slides forward into the point on impact to drive penetration deep.
Brenneke rates the TKO for two-inch, five-shot groups at 50 yards, and field testing has shown it holding groups under three inches out at 75 yards. It stays effective on deer-sized game to 75 yards and beyond, and it still carries better than 1,100 fps a full 100 yards downrange. Whether you're running a dedicated rifled slug barrel or a smoothbore with a screw-in choke, this is a load worth patterning through your own gun to see what it can do.
The tin construction makes this a natural pick for hunters in areas where non-toxic ammunition is the way to go, and it means less lead exposure for you, your dinner table, and the surrounding environment. Brenneke has been refining shotgun slugs since 1898, and the TKO carries that pedigree with a genuinely modern twist. It's a clean, hard-hitting choice for the deer woods when you want the punch of a slug without the lead.
Yes. The TKO was the first lead-free slug designed to perform in both rifled and smoothbore barrels using any choke. The tin point is ribbed so it passes smoothly through the constriction, which means you can run it in a rifled slug gun or a smoothbore with a screw-in choke.
Brenneke rates it as highly effective on deer-sized game out to 75 yards and beyond. It leaves the muzzle at 2,001 fps and still carries better than 1,100 fps at 100 yards, so there's plenty of energy on tap. As with any slug, pattern it through your own gun to confirm your effective range.
The projectile is built from tin instead of lead, which is where the name Tin KnockOut comes from. Brenneke put years of R&D into the design so the lighter tin still delivers deep penetration and around 2,607 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. The weight-forward shape and patented rear that slides into the point on impact are what keep the stopping power up there.
Brenneke rates it for two-inch, five-shot groups at 50 yards. Field testing has shown it holding groups under three inches out to 75 yards, which is excellent for a slug. Results will vary gun to gun, so patterning your own barrel is always the smart move.
