Brenneke has been engineering shotgun ammunition for decades, and the SuperSabot represents their approach to precision slug performance. This load stacks up to a 1-1/8 ounce sabot projectile in a standard 2.75-inch shell, firing at 1407 feet per second and delivering 2157 foot-pounds of muzzle energy.
The key difference between a sabot slug and traditional rifled slugs is how it grabs the barrel. Instead of the slug contacting the rifling directly, a plastic sabot wraps around the projectile. When you fire, the sabot engages the rifling and imparts a stabilizing spin. Once the round exits the barrel, the sabot falls away but the slug keeps spinning like a football spiraling downfield. This rotation is what lets the projectile maintain a much flatter trajectory than a traditional slug, with accuracy that rivals many centerfire rifles out to 100 yards.
The SuperSabot core consists of an aluminum point, brass jacket, and brass core. This construction means controlled expansion upon impact, with the slug mushrooming up to a full inch in diameter. The larger frontal diameter means a wider wound channel and more energy transfer into the target. Controlled expansion depends on the resistance of what you're shooting, which is exactly what you want for consistent performance across different game. The lead-free construction makes this round compliant where environmental considerations matter.
This ammunition is specifically designed for rifled shotgun barrels, where the spinning motion delivers its best accuracy and flat trajectory. If you're running a smooth barrel, sabot slugs will still function but you're not getting the benefit of the design. If you go the smooth barrel route, you'll need to run an open cylinder choke or no choke at all. For the most precision, pair this with a dedicated rifled slug barrel and a quality scope. You'll get tight groupings at hunting distances and the ballistics to make longer shots count.
The sabot slug uses a plastic sleeve that grips your rifled barrel's grooves, spinning the projectile as it travels downrange. Once it exits the barrel, the sabot falls away but the slug continues spinning, which creates in-flight stability similar to a rifle bullet. This spin is what allows five-shot groups to tighten up to 2 inches at 100 yards, compared to much larger spreads from traditional slugs.
You can fire them through a smooth barrel, but you're not getting what you paid for. Without the rifling to impart spin, you lose the accuracy advantage and flat trajectory that makes these rounds special. If you do use them in a smooth bore, remove any choke tubes to let the sabot separate safely. A rifled barrel is really where these shine.
The aluminum and brass construction maintains the same terminal ballistics as traditional lead designs. The projectile still expands to approximately 1 inch on impact and delivers excellent penetration and energy transfer. Lead-free construction makes this a good choice where environmental considerations are important, without sacrificing stopping power.
Brenneke claims accuracy out to 100 meters (about 109 yards), and many field reports confirm tight groups at that distance with a properly mounted scope. Most hunters find this load effective for medium to large game like deer out to 100 yards, though trajectory remains strong beyond that range compared to rifled slugs. Like any slug gun, you're limited more by your shooting skill and optics than the ammunition itself.
