A brass hammer is one of those tools that quietly separates a real gunsmith's bench from a junk drawer full of hardware store parts. This Grace USA 8oz long brass hammer is built for the jobs where a steel face would leave marks and regret behind. The brass head is soft enough to drive pins, tap parts into alignment, and seat components without marring bluing or scratching a receiver, but it still delivers a solid, controlled strike when you commit to it.
Grace USA has been turning out tools since 1941, and it shows in how this one is put together. The brass head is hand turned from CDA 360 brass rod extruded in a USA mill, then polished before a properly seasoned hickory handle gets pressed in and locked down with a brass pin. That elongated head is the whole point of the L model. It reaches into deeper, tighter spots where a stubby head can't get a clean angle, which matters when you're working around triggers, slides, and other cramped areas.
The head weighs in at 8 ounces with roughly a 3/4 inch face diameter, and the overall length runs about 10-1/2 inches. That combination gives you a nice balance between reach and swing weight. It's heavy enough to move stubborn pins but light enough that you keep full control on delicate work. Folks who use these tend to point out the balance and the way it just feels right in the hand after years of use.
While this hammer was made specifically for the gun trade, it earns its keep for woodworkers, machinists, and mechanics too. Anywhere you need a soft face that protects the surface you're striking, this one delivers. Brass eventually mushrooms with hard use, but it dresses back up easily on a file or grinder, and the hickory handle can be replaced down the road if you ever manage to wear it out. This is a buy-it-once kind of tool.
No, that's exactly why brass is the material of choice here. It's noticeably softer than steel, so it drives pins and taps parts into place without marring bluing, finishes, or the parts themselves. That soft face is the whole reason gunsmiths keep a brass hammer on the bench.
The BH-8L uses an elongated head instead of the shorter standard shape. That extra reach lets you get a clean, square strike in deeper recesses and tight spots where a stubby head can't reach. If you regularly work around cramped assemblies, the long head is worth having.
Absolutely. While it was designed for the gun trade, it's a favorite among woodworkers, machinists, and mechanics too. Anywhere you need a soft, non-marring strike, this hammer fits the job.
That's normal wear with any brass hammer and it's easy to fix. You can dress the face back to shape with a file or bench grinder in a couple of minutes. The seasoned hickory handle can also be replaced if it ever wears out, so this is a tool built to last.
