The action and locking lug recess on a bolt gun quietly collect brass shavings, powder residue, dried grease, and leftover solvent. Most folks scrub the bore religiously and never touch these spots, mostly because they're a pain to reach. That trapped grit is what leads to sluggish cycling and slowly wears on your bolt, lugs, and action over time. This kit from Bore Tech is built to get in there and clean those areas the right way.
The heart of this kit is a molded rubber wiper that replaces the old-school dental rolls and felts people used to jam in there. You spike a 2.5 inch round patch over the wiper, run it into the action, and it flexes to match the shape of the action walls and lug recess. It grabs debris instead of falling apart or packing full of fouling like cotton rolls tend to do. The wiper is solvent resistant, so a little cleaner on the patch won't chew it up.
You get a 20 inch polished stainless steel rod that's long enough to keep the handle behind the stock, so a tall cheek piece or your knuckles never get in the way. A polymer rod collar slides forward to center everything in the action and keep the rod off delicate parts. There's also a medium cotton chamber mop for wiping out solvent and loose fouling after the bore work is done. The mop handles roughly 6mm/.243 through .308/7.62 chambers.
This 2-lug version fits most popular centerfire actions with a 0.695 to 0.700 inch bolt body diameter, which covers a big chunk of Remington, Winchester, Ruger, Browning, Savage, and plenty of custom builds. If you run something like a Weatherby, Sako, Kimber, or CZ with a different bolt diameter, or a 3-lug action, you'll want the universal wiper and correct collar sold separately. This 2-lug kit is made for centerfire bolt actions with a 0.695 to 0.700 inch bolt body diameter, which covers most Remington, Winchester, Ruger, Browning, Savage, and many custom actions. If you have a Weatherby, Sako, Kimber, CZ, or a 3-lug action, you'll need the universal wiper and a matching collar, which are sold separately. It's worth measuring your bolt body if you're unsure.
The medium cotton chamber mop that comes in the kit fits roughly 6mm/.243 caliber up through .308/7.62. That range covers a lot of common hunting and target chamberings. For cartridges outside that window, Bore Tech offers other chamber mop sizes separately.
The bolt action wiper is designed for 2.5 inch round patches, and the kit comes with a supply of Bore Tech X-Count patches to get you started. You just spike a patch over the rubber wiper and it conforms to the action walls as you rotate it. When you run low, standard 2.5 inch round patches will do the job.
Run this after your barrel cleaning is finished. Start with the chamber mop to clear solvent and loose fouling, then slide the rod through with the collar centering it, and work the wiper into the action and lug recess to pull out trapped debris. It's the final step that gets the areas most cleaning routines skip.
