Cold bluing is one of those skills that pays for itself the first time you use it, and Perma Blue Liquid is the product most folks reach for. It's a fast-acting solution that reacts with clean steel to build a blue-black color, whether you're fixing a bright spot where the holster wore through or refinishing a barrel and action from scratch. The 32 oz quart bottle is the size to grab if you do this regularly or want to dip smaller parts rather than swab them, and it goes a long way.
The liquid formula darkens quicker than the paste version, which makes it handy for touch-ups and for covering larger surfaces evenly. It works on steel only, so keep in mind it won't take on stainless, aluminum, or other non-ferrous metals. Small parts like screws, sights, and triggers come out looking sharp, and with enough coats you can bring a tired barrel back to a respectable finish.
Prep is where these jobs are won or lost. Every part has to be stripped of oil, wax, and rust before the solution touches it, since any contamination leaves blotchy results. Degrease thoroughly, avoid touching bare metal with your fingers, and warming the steel slightly before you apply helps the color grab. Shake the bottle, wipe on thin even coats, buff back with a clean rag between applications, and repeat until you hit the shade you want. Larger surfaces almost always need several passes.
Once the color is where you want it, rinse or wipe the part down, dry it completely, and seal everything with a good gun oil to stop flash rust and lock in the finish. Letting the part cure before reassembly gives you a tougher result. Cold bluing like this won't match the depth or wear resistance of a professional hot-tank job, but for repairs, project guns, and keeping your firearms looking cared for, it earns its spot in the shop.
It's made for regular blued steel and reacts with the metal to create the blue-black color. It will not blue stainless steel, aluminum, or other non-ferrous metals, so it's best kept to carbon steel parts. If your gun has a stainless barrel or aluminum receiver, this isn't the product for those pieces.
