The TPR9 name stands for Thunder Pro Redesign, and that's exactly what Bersa set out to do. They took the proven Thunder Pro platform, which was originally developed with law enforcement use in mind, and refined it into a more feature-rich, shooter-focused pistol. The result is a full-size 9mm that offers a lot of gun for the money, with an aluminum alloy frame, serrated steel slide, and a two-tone finish that gives it a sharp, classic look.
The trigger is one of the TPR9's most talked-about features. It runs a traditional DA/SA action with a decocker/manual safety combo that's fully ambidextrous. The double-action pull is smooth without a ton of stacking, and once you're into single-action territory, the reset is surprisingly short, closer to what you'd expect from a much more expensive pistol. DA pull comes in around 7.5 lbs and SA around 3 lbs, so the difference between your first shot and follow-up shots is very manageable.
The 4.25-inch barrel uses polygonal rifling, which can contribute to slightly better velocity and makes cleanup a little more straightforward compared to traditional land-and-groove barrels. The slide features front and rear serrations for a positive grip during manipulation, and there's a loaded chamber indicator so you can do a quick check without having to rack the slide. A steel guide rod keeps recoil management consistent, and field-stripping is genuinely easy, no trigger pull required during disassembly.
The frame is set up for real-world use. A Picatinny accessory rail sits under the dust cover for a light or laser, the controls are all ambidextrous (including slide release and magazine release), and the textured polymer grips keep things manageable during extended range sessions. Interchangeable Sig Sauer-type three-dot sights mean you have a solid upgrade path without hunting for proprietary hardware. The package includes two 17-round magazines, which is a nice bonus at this price range.
The TPR9 runs a traditional double-action/single-action (DA/SA) setup. The first shot fires in double action when the hammer is down, and subsequent shots run in the lighter, shorter-reset single action. The ambidextrous safety lever doubles as a decocker, so you can safely lower the hammer without dry-firing, similar to how it works on a Beretta 92 or CZ 75. It's a classic, proven system that a lot of experienced pistol shooters appreciate.
The TPR9 ships with interchangeable Sig Sauer-compatible three-dot fixed sights on both the front and rear. Because they use the Sig Sauer sight footprint, there's a solid selection of aftermarket options available if you want to swap in night sights or higher-visibility alternatives down the road. That's a real advantage over pistols with proprietary sight cuts.
This model ships with two 17-round magazines. Having a second magazine included right out of the box is a genuinely useful perk, especially at this price point. The TPR9 uses the same magazines as the Bersa Thunder Pro, so additional factory and aftermarket magazines are available from several sources.
It fits both roles well. The full-size alloy frame and 4.25-inch barrel give it enough weight and sight radius for accurate, comfortable range sessions. The 17+1 capacity, Picatinny rail for a light or laser, and reliable DA/SA action with a manual safety make it a capable home defense option too. It was originally developed with law enforcement in mind, so the durability and reliability standards are there.
Field stripping the TPR9 is straightforward and does not require pulling the trigger. With the magazine removed and the chamber verified empty, you rotate a lever above the trigger guard downward 90 degrees and the slide comes right off the frame. From there, you have access to the barrel, recoil spring, and guide rod. Reassembly is just the reverse, and the whole process takes under a minute once you've done it a couple times.
The TPR9 is the full-size model with a 4.25-inch barrel and 17-round magazines, while the TPR9C is the compact version with a 3.25-inch barrel and a 13-round capacity. The full-size TPR9 is a better fit for range use, home defense, and open carry, while the TPR9C is more suited for concealed carry where a smaller frame matters. Both share the same DA/SA action and general feature set.
