Description

The Berger VLD Hunter is one of the flattest-shooting hunting projectiles you can load, and this .30 caliber 185 grain version is a favorite among handloaders running .308 Win, .300 Win Mag, and other thirty-cal cases built for reach. It carries a G1 BC of 0.558 and a G7 BC of 0.286, numbers that translate to less wind drift and better retained velocity the farther your shot stretches. Each bullet measures .308 in diameter with a hollow point boat tail profile and a sectional density of 0.279.

What Sets the Berger VLD Hunter Apart

The heart of this design is the secant ogive, an aggressive nose shape that cuts drag compared to a standard tangent profile. That reduced drag is why the VLD line shoots flat and bucks the wind, and it pairs with the proven J4 Precision jacket that custom bullet makers lean on for consistency. The thinner hunting jacket is the key difference from Berger's target VLD, giving you match-grade uniformity with terminal performance tuned for game.

How the 185 gr VLD Hunter Performs on Game

These bullets are engineered to penetrate roughly 2 to 3 inches before they begin to open up, then dump their energy inside the animal rather than passing through like a solid. On expansion they shed a large portion of their mass as fragments, driving extreme hydrostatic shock and a wound cavity that can run 13 to 15 inches through the vitals. The result is fast, humane kills with less tracking after the shot.

Loading the .30 Cal 185 gr VLD Hunter

Berger recommends seating these close to or touching the rifling for best accuracy, though plenty of rifles shoot well with the bullet backed off as much as .150 inches from the lands, so some load development pays off. A 1:12 twist or faster will stabilize the 185 grain properly. Keep in mind these are component projectiles for reloading, not loaded ammunition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What cartridges work with the Berger VLD Hunter .30 cal 185 gr?

These are .308 diameter component bullets, so they load into any thirty-caliber case you can build around a 185 grain projectile. Common choices include .308 Winchester, .30-06, and .300 Win Mag. Since they are reloading components, you will need brass, powder, and primers to assemble a finished round.

What twist rate do the 185 gr VLD Hunter bullets need?

Berger lists a minimum twist of 1:12 inches or faster to properly stabilize this 185 grain bullet. Most modern .308 and .300 magnum barrels fall in that range or tighter, so stabilization usually isn't an issue. A faster twist like 1:10 will also work well.

How should I seat the Berger VLD Hunter for best accuracy?

Berger recommends seating the VLD close to or touching the rifling to get the most out of the secant ogive. That said, many rifles shoot their tightest groups with the bullet backed off the lands, sometimes as much as .150 inches, so a little load development goes a long way. Keep an eye on overall length if you are feeding from a magazine.

How do these VLD Hunter bullets perform on game?

The thinner J4 hunting jacket lets the bullet penetrate a few inches before expanding, then it fragments and dumps energy inside the vitals. That creates heavy hydrostatic shock and a large wound cavity, which typically drops animals quickly with minimal tracking. They are built for medium and large game at longer ranges where the high BC really shines.
