The BMR, short for Bergara Micro Rimfire, is what happens when a company known for building seriously accurate centerfire barrels turns its attention to a scaled-down rimfire action. This version is chambered in .22 WMR, which gives you a real step up in reach and thump over a standard .22 LR without adding recoil worth mentioning. At roughly 5.5 pounds and 38 inches overall, it carries easily on a long walk through the squirrel woods, and the tactical gray stock with black specks shrugs off weather and scratched-up truck beds alike.
The 20-inch barrel is 4140 chrome moly steel with a matte blued finish and a No. 4 taper, cut with a match chamber and a 1:16 twist that handles .22 WMR loads well. The muzzle is threaded 1/2-28 and ships with a thread protector, so adding a suppressor or muzzle device is a five-second job. Up top, the receiver wears an integrated 30 MOA Picatinny rail, which gives you plenty of elevation for stretching this magnum rimfire out past typical plinking distances. There are no iron sights, so plan on a scope from day one.
The Bergara Performance trigger comes crisp from the factory and adjusts with nothing more than an Allen key. Better still, the action accepts most Remington 700 pattern aftermarket triggers with a side bolt release, so tinkerers have room to grow. The whole rifle has the same feel as Bergara's B-14 line, just shrunk down to rimfire proportions.
Bergara designed the BMR to fit the base class in NRL22 competition, and it ships with both a 5-round magazine for hunting and a 10-round magazine for running stages. That flexibility is the whole point of this rifle. One day it is a coyote and prairie dog rig, the next it is knocking steel at your local rimfire match, and it does both without complaint.
