This is a hammer-fired DA/SA pistol, which is a big part of the appeal. The G-SD was developed with input from Langdon Tactical and features a heavy-contour rotating barrel that noticeably softens recoil compared to the standard model. It also upgrades to a carry-style Type G decocker, an oversized reversible mag release, a Hi-Vis orange front sight, and adds an extended 20-round magazine on top of the usual two 17-rounders.
Instead of the tilting barrel found on most pistols, the PX4's barrel rotates as it unlocks, redirecting some of the recoil energy rotationally rather than sending it straight back. Combined with the heavier barrel profile on the G-SD, the muzzle stays flatter and follow-up shots come quicker. Many owners compare the feel to shooting a compensated pistol.
No, and that's by design. The G-style lever safely drops the hammer to double action but springs back up on its own, so there is no on/off safety position to remember. If it gets bumped during handling, you just pull the trigger again through the double-action stroke. It's a popular setup for carry and duty use.
It leans toward home defense, duty, and range work given the full-size frame, but plenty of people carry it with the flush 17-round magazines. At 28.8 ounces it's heavier than a striker-fired compact, though that extra weight is part of why it shoots so soft. With a quality holster and belt it carries better than the specs suggest.
