There are pistols, and then there are pistols with a story. The Beretta 92XI SAO Frog Skin sits firmly in the second camp. This is part of the limited-edition Foreign Combat Series, a collaboration between Beretta USA and Howe Arms, a veteran-owned business founded by two-tour Army combat veteran Richard Howe to support disabled combat veterans and their families. Every single pistol in this series is hand-painted by those veterans, meaning no two are exactly alike.
The Frog Skin camo itself has roots going back to World War II. The M1942 pattern started as a US Marine Raider camouflage and was later picked up by the French Foreign Legion's parachute regiments during the First Indochina War, eventually spreading to several NATO nations. That's the pattern wrapped around this pistol in durable Cerakote, applied by hand.
Under the camo, this is a thoroughly modern 92. The 92XI platform brought some long-overdue upgrades to the classic 90 Series family, most notably the frame-mounted ambidextrous safety, which sits in a much more natural position for drawing and manipulating quickly. The action is single-action only, using Beretta's X-treme S flat-faced trigger with DLC-coated components and a skeletonized hammer for a crisp, consistent break and quick reset. If you're a fan of the 92 but always wished it ran cocked-and-locked like a 1911, this is the version you've been waiting for.
The slide is optic-ready with an MRDS footprint, and the fiber optic front sight gives you a fast natural sight picture out of the box. The Vertec-style frame features aggressive checkering and enhanced grip texturing for a secure hold under recoil. The 4.7-inch barrel with black DLC coating handles the ballistics, and the 18+1 capacity keeps things competitive. Two magazines are included.

The classic Beretta 92 fires double-action on the first shot and single-action on follow-ups, which means the trigger feel changes between shots. The 92XI SAO eliminates that completely with a consistent single-action pull every time, using the X-treme S flat-faced trigger with DLC-coated components and a skeletonized hammer. The result is a noticeably crisper, more predictable break that competition and carry-focused shooters tend to prefer.
Yes. The slide comes with an MRDS footprint already cut, so you can mount a compatible mini red dot without sending it out for milling. It ships with a fiber optic front sight for use without a red dot, and the rear sight is a fixed black unit. Note that an optic plate adapter may be required depending on which red dot you choose.
That's actually one of the main selling points of the SAO configuration. With the frame-mounted ambidextrous safety, you can chamber a round, cock the hammer, engage the safety, and carry it cocked and locked just like a 1911. The safety lever sits in a more natural position compared to the old slide-mounted safety on earlier 92-series pistols, making it faster to disengage during a draw.
The aluminum frame includes a three-slot Picatinny rail forward of the trigger guard, so standard weapon lights and lasers attach without an adapter. This keeps the platform versatile for both duty and home defense setups.
Both, genuinely. The hand-painted finish and limited-edition nature make it a standout piece to own, but the 92XI platform is a fully functional, full-size service pistol built on Beretta's proven 90 Series engineering. The DLC-coated trigger components, optic-ready slide, and 18+1 capacity are all real working features, not just window dressing.
