The MRAD platform earned its stripes the hard way, winning the SOCOM Advanced Sniper Rifle trials and landing the Army's Mk 22 contract. The SMR, short for Single Mission Rifle, is Barrett's answer for the shooter who wants that same proven action without paying for features they'll never use. It drops the quick-change barrel system and the folding stock, and in return you get a rifle that runs about 2.5 pounds lighter and a full inch shorter than the standard MRAD while keeping 90 percent parts commonality and the same .75 MOA accuracy standard.
The caliber choice here is no accident. The .338 Norma Magnum is one of the three chamberings the military spec'd for the Mk 22 program, and it earned that spot by pushing heavy .338 bullets with outstanding ballistics out past distances where most cartridges have long since given up. The 26 inch fluted barrel with its 1:9.4 twist stabilizes the long, high-BC projectiles this cartridge was built around, and the fluting cuts weight while helping the barrel shed heat during longer strings. The barrel is fully free floated, secured in the monolithic aluminum upper with a standard barrel nut, and it wears a suppressor-capable muzzle brake so you can run a can when you want to.
The fixed stock still gives you a vertically adjustable cheek piece and length of pull spacers, so getting behind the rifle correctly is easy. The bolt rides in an enclosed polymer bolt guide that keeps the action running smooth even when grit and weather get involved, and the match-grade trigger module adjusts to your preferred pull and drops out of the lower without tools. A full-length Picatinny top rail and M-LOK handguard handle glass, bipods, and whatever else your setup calls for. Finished in Tungsten Grey Cerakote and fed from a 10 round magazine, this is a serious long range rifle for ELR matches, dedicated precision work, or anyone who wants Mk 22 pedigree in a single-caliber package.
The SMR is a single-caliber version of the MRAD, so it doesn't have the tool-swappable barrel system, and the stock is fixed instead of folding. Those two changes trim roughly 2.5 pounds and about an inch of overall length off the rifle. It still shares 90 percent of its parts with the standard MRAD and carries the same .75 MOA accuracy standard.
Yes. The SMR ships with Barrett's suppressor-capable muzzle brake, which serves as the mounting point for compatible suppressors. That makes adding a can straightforward without needing to rethread or modify the barrel.
.338 Norma Mag fires the same heavy, high-BC .338 bullets with slightly less powder and a shorter case, which generally means a bit less recoil and better efficiency in magazine-fed rifles. It's also one of the chamberings the military selected for the Mk 22 sniper rifle program built on this same MRAD platform, so factory match ammo support has grown considerably. For long range work, the practical performance difference between the two is small.
You can. The fixed stock includes a vertically adjustable cheek piece plus spacers for setting length of pull, so you can dial in a proper fit behind the scope. The match-grade trigger module is adjustable for pull weight and removes from the lower receiver without tools, and the Magpul-pattern pistol grip can be swapped for any AR-style grip you prefer.
