This isn't just a long-range rifle — it's a complete modular system built to military contract specifications, now available in the exact chambering that USSOCOM selected for their Mk 22 Advanced Sniper Rifle: .338 Norma Magnum. If you've been on the fence between .338 Norma and .338 Lapua, the Norma's shorter case is specifically optimized for heavy, high-BC 300-grain projectiles seated at standard magazine lengths. That translates to a flatter trajectory at distance and slightly better efficiency compared to the Lapua with equivalent bullet weights.
The receiver is machined from monolithic 7000-series aluminum and comes with a full-length 21.75-inch M1913 Picatinny top rail with a built-in taper — a big deal for dialing in a precision optic at long range. The handguard runs mounting slots at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock so you can attach a bipod, pressure switches, lights, or whatever else your setup calls for. The bolt rides inside an enclosed polymer guide, which keeps debris out and the action running smoothly even in rough conditions.
One of the MRAD's biggest selling points is the user-changeable barrel system. The .338 Norma Magnum uses a shorter case specifically designed to optimize seating of heavy, high-BC 300-grain bullets within standard magazine length constraints — something the .338 Lapua was not originally optimized for. The Norma offers slightly better ballistic efficiency with those heavier projectiles and somewhat less felt recoil. The .338 Lapua has a longer track record and wider ammo availability, but the Norma is the round USSOCOM selected for the Mk 22 Advanced Sniper Rifle program for exactly these reasons.

The MRAD with a 26-inch barrel weighs approximately 14.5 pounds without an optic, so this is not a lightweight carry rifle. That weight is largely intentional — it helps absorb recoil and keeps the platform stable during extended range sessions. A quality bipod is highly recommended and easy to attach via the handguard's 6 o'clock mounting slot. Many owners also run a rear bag or monopod for full support.
Yes. Barrett built genuinely ambidextrous controls into the MRAD.
